 Ambai | C S Lakshmi

Ambai (the pen name of  C.S. Lakshmi) is an Indian Tamil feminist writer. She was born in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu in 1944. She spent her childhood in Mumbai and grew up in Bangalore. She was brought up in a family with an artistic background. Both her grandmother and mother were musicians. They fell a good influence on Ambai. She obtained her higher education in  Madras Christian College and in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. After completing her institutional education, she worked as a college teacher.     

Ambai began her writing career at an early age. She published her first prose work ‘Nandimalai Charalilae’ when she was still a teenager. Her other works include ‘Siragugal Muriyum (Wings Get Broken), The Face Behind the Mask (1984), The Singer and the Song: Conversations with Women Musicians’ (2000) etc, apart from many contributions to literary journals. He wrote on feminist themes with an orthodox view. As a feminist writer, she explored various aspects of women’s experience in innovative literary styles. 0 0 0

Eunice De Souza 

Eunice De Souza (1940- 2017) was an Indian English poetess, critic and novelist. She was born in Pune, Maharashtra. She gained her elementary education in a local school and higher education in Mumbai and in America and became a professor of English literature. From 1969, she taught English literature at Xavier’s College, Mumbai and retired from the same college as the head of the department. She had also been involved in theatre first as an actress and then as a director. She began her literary career as a poet. There are five collections of poetry books to her credit as Fix (1979),  Women in Dutch Painting (1988), Ways of Belonging (1990), Selected and New Poems (1994) and Learn from the Almond Leaf (2016). De Souza had written four collections of folk tales for children and edited the anthologies: Nine Indian Women Poets (1997), Women’s Voices: Selections from 19th and early 20th century, Indian Writing in English (2002), and Purdah (2004). She two novels also as Dangerlok (2001), and Dev and Simran in 2003.

De Souza’s poetry deals with the themes of gender discrimination and love for man.

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was a great story-teller and novelist of America. He was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. He spent much of his early years roaming about in the woods with a rifle in his shoulder or rowing out across the large lake in quest of big fish. He wrote short stories and novels. The novel entitled ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ is his masterpiece. It is considered to be a classic novel. It won him the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize. The novel is about the persistent struggle to attain a goal in life. In the novel, he shows that man can die but cannot be defeated. He was the only writer in the world who took part in both the World Wars. He made an end to his life by committing suicide in 1961. Some of his well-known novels are:  For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises,  A Farewell to Arms, Indian Camp etc.   0 0 0

Hira Bansode  

Hira Bansode (1939-), was an Indian Marathi Dalit poetess who articulated the pains and sufferings, hardships and hopes, dreams and reality of the lives of the lower castes in her poems. She struggled through her writings for caste equality which seemed to be a dream of the lower castes of people even after the independence of India.

Hira Bansode was born into a Mahar (low caste) family in a village of Pune district, Maharashtra. When she was still a child, her parents moved to Bombay where her father became a municipal worker (sweeper). Child Hira took her education there. She was a victim of child marriage and got married at the age of thirteen. But her husband and father-in-law encouraged her to get higher education. Subsequently, she took M. A. degree in Marathi literature.

From her childhood, she was a lover of songs which later on found expression in her verses. She had published three collections of poetry as Pournima, Phiyad (1984) and Phoenix (2001). As a Dalit poetess, she has been acclaimed highly and owned several awards. 0 0 0

Henry Reed

Henry Reed (1914-1986) was a teacher, translator, journalist, poet, playwright and radio broadcaster. He was born in Birmingham. He was educated at King Edward VI School and then at the University of Birmingham.  There he associated with the poets like W. H. Auden, Louis MacNeice and Walter Allen and was inspired by them to pursue literary activities. During World War-II, he served the British Army as a Japanese translator. After the World War-II was over he worked as a radio broadcaster with the BBC.

Some of his literary works are ‘A Map of Verona’, ‘Hilda Tablet’, ‘As I Walked Down New Grub Street’, ‘Lessons of the War’ and some others.

Jotirao Phule

Jotirao Phule (1827-90), full name Jyotiram Govindrao Phule, popularly known as ‘Mahatma Phule’ was an Indian-Marathi social activist, thinker and writer.  He was born at Katgun, Maharashtra, India in 1827 to an agricultural Mali ( a law) caste family. His father’s name was Govindrao and mother’s name was  Chimnabai. Jyotirao took his primary education in a local school and then attended local Scottish Mission High School. As customary, he married Savitribai Phule at an early age of thirteen.  From his childhood, he experienced Brahmin supremacy over the so-called low castes. One day at the age of twenty-one, he attended a wedding of a Brahmin friend and participated in the customary marriage procession, but he was badly rebuked and insulted by his friend’s parents for his participation. Joytirao was badly affected by this insult. It brought a  turning point to his life, to his philosophy and activities. He though got the chance of taking a government job, yet he did not like to work under the British Government. Instead, he established himself as a successful cultivator and merchant.  He was sensitive to the injustice done to the lower castes of society by the Brahmin. He, as a revolt took up the pen to his hand and began writing articles and books on the themes of social injustice, caste discrimination etc. 

His published works include Tritiya Ratna (1855), Brahmananche Kasab (1869),  Powada: Chatrapati Shivajiraje Bhosle Yancha (1869),  Manav Muhammad, Gulamgiri (1873)  etc. Among his creations ‘Gulamgiri‘ is considered to be his masterpiece.

He died in 1890 at the age of sixty-three. 0 0 0

Joytiprashad Agarwala

Joytiprashad Agarwala (1903- 1951) was a poet, lyricist, dramatist, cinema director and freedom fighter.

Joytiprashad Agarwala was born in the Tea Garden of Tamulbari. His father’s name was Paramanada Agrawala and mother’s name was Kiranmoi Agarwala. He matriculated in 1926 and went to England for higher education but he returned without taking any degree. Then he went to Germany to take training in cinematography. After returning from Germany he produced and directed the first Assamese cinema Joymoti in 1935. In  Quit India Movement, 1942 he took an active part. 1939 he made the second Assamese cinema called ‘Indramalati’.

He composed many lyrics on the themes of patriotism, nature, love, beauty and rebellion against the British Rule in India. He also wrote some plays as ‘Sonit Kunwari, Karengar Ligiri, Lavita, Khanikar, Nimati Kaina, Shun Pakhili, Kanaklata’ and ‘Sundar Kunwar’

Through his writings, he celebrated the glory of beauty in all things so he is called ‘Rupkunwar’ (Prince of Beauty).

Langston Hughes 

Langston Hughes (1902-67)  was an American-Negro poet, short-story writer, novelist, columnist and playwright. He was born in Joplin, Missouri, and grew up in Kansas, Illinois and Ohio. He came of a very poor but noted black family.“

Langston Hughes began his literary career at an early age and he published his first collection of poetry ‘The Negro Speaks of Rivers in 1921 when he was only nineteen. He received his early education in local schools and afterwards attended Columbia University for a year, but poverty drove him to take up odd jobs like working on ships. Some years later he attended Lincoln University. In the 1930s Hughes was influenced by the ideals of socialism. Besides being a much-acclaimed poet he wrote short stories and plays also. He wrote on the theme of racial oppression and class discrimination.

Some of his well known poetic works are: ‘The Negro Speaks of Rivers’ (1921), ‘The Weary Blues’ (1926), ‘Pierrot’ (1926), ‘Come to the Waldorf Astoria’ (1931) ‘Let America Be America Again’ etc. As a poet, he represented the voice of the oppressed Negros for which he is hailed as the ‘Poet Laureate of the Negro Race’. 0 0 0

Marge Piercy 

Marge Piercy (1936-) was an American poet, novelist and a social activist.  She was born in Detroit, Michigan into such a family that had been, like many others, affected by the Depression. Bert Piercy and Robert Piercy were her parents. When Piercy was a young child, the family moved into a small house in a working-class neighbourhood in Detroit. At seventeen, Piercy went to study at the University of Michigan. Thence she took to participating in many progressive movements, such as civil rights, anti-Vietnam war, feminism and the resistance to the America-Iraq war. She has authored seventeen novels some of which are: Woman On the Edge of Time (1976), Gone to Soldiers (1987), The Longings of Women (1994), Going Down Fast (1969), He, She and It etc.  She composed many poems. Among her poetry books mention may be made of ‘The Moon is Always Female (1980), Circles on the Water (1982), What are Big Girls Made of (1997) and some others. She had the credit of writing short stories also. ‘The Cost of Lunch Etc’. (2014) is an anthology of her short stories. As a writer, she was acclaimed with many awards and honours as Arthur C. Clarke Award, Bradley Award, Brit ha-Dorot Award, Golden Rose Poetry Prize, Carolyn Kizer Poetry Award etc.  0 0 0

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou (1928-) was an American Negro poet, playwright, actress, memoirist and social activist. 

He was born in St. Louis, Missouri. After her birth, her parents separated from each other and Maya Angelou was brought up by her grandmother. At the age of eight, she was sexually harassed by one of her mother’s boyfriend. During her childhood, she appeared to be taciturn and became accustomed to reading books and reciting verses. From her childhood, she had been experiencing the evil effects of racism and herself became a victim of it. One day, during her childhood, she happened to go to a white dentist, but the doctor refused to treat her because she was a black one.  In addition to these, she was often raped that made her a mother of a child at the age of sixteen. All these experiences built up her mind a resolute one and she determined to speak against social evils like racism and class distinction which later on get reflected on her writings. Her attitude to life is summed up in her words: “You may encounter defeats but you must not be defeated”.

Maya Angelou has written five autobiographical books, among which mention may be made of ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ (1969) ‘The Heart of a Woman’ (1981),  ‘And Still I Rise (1978) etc. 0 0 0

 Madhavdev

Madhavdev (1489–1596) was an Assamese saint-poet and chief disciple of Shrimanta Shankardev, the founder of  Neo-Vaishnavism ( Ekasarana Dharma).  

Madhavdev was born in May 1489 in the village of Letekupukhuri, Narayanpur in Lakhimpur District of Assam.  His father’s name was Govidagiri and mother’s name was Manorama. Madhavdev took his education under the teacher named Rajendra Adhyapak and became well versed in the Tantras, Tarka-Shastra, Purana and other literature associated with Saktism. 

In 1532 he met Srimanta Shankardeva and converted to Vaishnavism. Since his conversion, he became hand and glove associate of his Guru Sankardeva and became indifferent to mundane life. After  Guru’s advice, he composed poems, devotional songs and dramas as a means of preaching Vaishnavism.  His literary composition includes ‘Naam Ghokha’, Bhakti Ratnavali, Borgeets,  Nine Jhumuras (one-act plays) and Naam Maalikaa. In addition to these, he rendered the Adi Kanda of Valmiki’s Ramayana into Assamese. 

Madhavdev, after contributing a lot to the Assamese culture,  passed away in 1596 in Koch Bihar. 0 0 0

Nalinibala Devi

Nalinibala Devi (1898– 1977 was an Indian -Assamese biographer and mystical female poet. She was born in Guwahati in 1898. Her father Karmaveer Nabin Chandra Bordoloi was a notable Assamese-Indian revolutionary who fought against the British rule in India. Nalinibala Devi had hardly got the chance to undergo formal education. As a social custom, she became a victim of child marriage and at the age of twelve, she was married to Jeeveshwar Changkakoti by whom Nalinibala gave birth to five kids. But her husband died once Nalinibala was solely nineteen. After her husband’s death, she lost two of her children early in life. These tragic incidents couldn’t break her down and as a way of consolation, she started reading books at home and started writing poems on the theme of love, patriotism and mysticism. Her initial book of poems ‘Shandhiyar Shur’ (Evening Melody) was published in 1928. Her other poetic works are Alakananda, Sopunar Shur, Porosh Moni, Yuga Devata, Shesh Puja, Parijator Abhishek, Prahlad, Meghdut, Suravi, Rooprekha and Seshor Shur (Last Melody). In addition to writing these poetry books, she wrote some essays and biographies that include ‘Shantipath’ (essay anthology), ‘Smriti Tirtha’ (story on her father’s life)’ Sardar Vallavbhai Patel, Biswadeepa and Eri Aha Dinbur (autobiography). She had to her credit one drama titled Meerabai. In 1950 she established ‘Sadou Asom Parijat Kanan’ that later become celebrated as ‘Moina Parijat’ (the kids’ organisation of Assam). She was awarded ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for her poetry book  ‘Alakananda’ in 1968 and was honoured with ‘Padma Shri’ in 1957 by the Indian Government. She was the president of the 23rd Jorhat Session of Assam Sahitya Sabha (Assam Literary Society) in 1955. 0 0 0

Nabakanta Baruah

Nabakanta Barua (29 December 1926 – 14 July 2002) was a prominent Assamese poet and novelist. He is also known by his pseudonyms as ‘Ekhud Kokaideo’ and ‘Seema Dutta’.

Nabakanta Barua was born in 1926 in Guwahati, Assam. Nilakanta Barua, a school inspector and later teacher was his father and Swarnalata Baruani was hi smother. 

He started his education at a local school and completed his matriculation in 1941. After that, he got admitted to Cotton College, Guwahati. In 1943, he went to Shantiniketan (West Bengal) and took B.A. degree from there with English honours. In 1953 he took  M. A. in English literature from Aligarh Muslim University.

After taking his M.A. he taught at A.K college, Uttar Pradesh for some months. But the same year he returned to Assam and joined Jagannath Barooah College in Jorhat and after only a few months he joined Cotton College, Guwahati and worked there until 1964. From 1964 to 1967 he worked at Assam Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad. He again joined Cotton College and retired from retired as a vice principal in 1984.

He began practising literature at an early age and kept writing until his death. He wrote poetry, novel,  literary criticism, songs and children literature. Among his poetry books mention may be made of ‘Hey Arnya Hey Mahanagar’, ‘Eti Doti Egharti Tora’, ‘Ravan’, ‘Shamrat’, ‘Yoti Aru Keitaman Sketch’, and ‘Dolongt Tamighara‘. His novels include Kapilpuriya Sadhu, Kakadeotar Har, Gorma Kunwari, and Manuh Ataibor Dip. His books written for children are Akharar Jakhala,  Siyali Palegoi Ratanpur and Vot-Ukare Vu.  In addition to these, he wrote some literary criticisms and songs also.

He served as the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha and presided over Asom Sahitya Sabha’s Bishwanath Chariali convention in 1990. 

Nabakanta Barua died on 14 July 2002. 0 0 0

Omprakash Valmiki

Omprakash Valmiki (1950-2013) was an Indian Hindi Writer. He was born in a village near Muzzafarnagar in Uttar Pradesh to a lower caste family. He took up higher education and become an engineer by profession.  He began his writing career at the age of twenty-four. ‘Joothan‘, autobiographical writing is said to be his best creation. In the book, he has narrated his sad experiences as a Dalit. Besides this, he has to his credit two anthologies of short stories, ‘Salam and Guspathiye’ and three anthologies of poetry: Sadiyan Ka Santaap (1989), Bas Ab Bahut Ho Chuka (1997) and Ab Aur Nahin (2003).  

He died of cancer in 2013. 0 0 0

Premchand

Premchand (1880-1936), real name Dhanpat Rai was an Indian short-story teller, novelist and essayist who wrote profusely in both Urdu and Hindi. 

He was born at Lamhi, a small village near Baranas in Uttar Pradesh. He took his early education in a local madrasa. His first collection of short stories in Urdu entitled Soze-Watan (The Lament of the Country) was published in 1908 under the pseudonym of Nawab Rai. The book was declared inflammatory and he was accused of sedition. All the seven hundred printed copies of ‘Soze-Watan’ were burnt in front of him. This was the first time that a literary work of any Indian writer had been treated with hostility.  Then Dhanpat Rai changed his pseudonym Nawab Rai to Premchand with which he established himself as a writer and earned popularity.

He wrote over three hundred short stories, a dozen novels and two plays, apart from innumerable essays and reviews. As a short story writer, he modernized the form of this genre of literature. He wrote on the themes of caste discrimination, blind faith, follies, dishonesty of the government officials, greed for money with a tone of irony and ridicule. Among his novels ‘Sevasadam’, ‘Gaban’, ‘Nirmala’ and ‘Godaan’ are well-known. Some of his well known short stories are ‘Panch Parmeshwar,’ ‘Namak Ka Daroga’, ‘Idgaah’, ‘Sadgati’ and ‘Kafan’

He also translated some fictions from Urdu and English into Hindi.  He had the credit of editing the magazine Madhuri and Hans. 

Premchand chaired the first convention of the ‘Indian Progressive Writers Association’ in 1936.  His writings provide evidence of his commitment to social causes. Many of his works such a Mazdoor, Seva Sadan, Godaan, Gaban, Shatranj Ke Khiladi and Sadgati have been given film versions.

Contributing much to the storehouse of Indian literature he died in 1936. 0 0 0

Rabindranath Tagore 

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Nobel Prize awardee Indian Bengali writer, musician, artist, social reformer,  intellectualist, educationalist and nationalist. He was born in Kolkata in 1861 to a well-to-do and reputed family. His father’s name was Debendranath Tagore and his mother’s name was Sarada Devi. Child Rabindranath found schooling boresome and hence he could hardly have his schooling up to high school. Then he was taught music, art and literature at home under private teachers. Though he did not like institutional education he was a voracious reader and studied Bengali, Sanskrit and English books at home after his own choice. He began writing verse at an early age of twelve and devoted himself to writing books. In 1883 he married Mrinalini Devi. 

As he devoted his life to writing, he wrote a huge number of books. He left no branch of literature to be untouched as he wrote poems, songs, short stories, dramas, novels, essays, criticisms etc. ‘Geetanjali’  a collection of songs is his masterpiece. This book owned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in 1913. He was the first Indian and first Bengali to won the prize. Love: love for man, love for nature, love for God and love for motherland are the main themes of his songs and poems. Among his best-known creations, apart from Geetanjali, mention may be made of Gora, Ghare Baire, Jana-Gana-Mana, Amar Shonar Bangla, Chokher Bali, Shesher Kabita, The Post Office, The Gardener, Yagayog and so on.  In the Bengali world, he is well-known as ‘Kabiguru’ (master of poets).

He died at Jorasanku Thakur Bari, Kolkata in 1941. 0 0 0

Roger Mais 

Roger Mais (1905-1955) was a Jamaican short story writer, journalist, poet, playwright and novelist. He was born into a middle-class family in Kingston.  He wrote on the themes of distinction between the privileged and non-privileged classes of society.  In 1944 he wrote a satire entitled ‘Now We Know’ and was accused of sedition. It bought him imprisonment for six months.  He wrote more than one hundred short stories and published two books of collected stories as ‘And Most of all Man’ and ‘Face and Other Stories’. His well-known novels include ‘The Hills Were Joyful Together’ (1953), ‘Brother Man’ (1954) and ‘Black Lightning’ (1955). He died of cancer in 1955 at the age of 49. 0 0 0

Sa’adat Hasan Manto

Sa’adat Hasan Manto (1912-55) was an Indian-Pakistani Urdu short story writer, novelist, essayist, playwright and screenwriter.  He was born in Samrala, in Punjab. He was educated in Amritsar and Aligarh. After completing his formal education in 1941, he took to work at the All India Radio, Delhi. There he wrote a number of radio plays. Two years later, Manto shifted to Bombay, writing screenplays for films. There he met other writers like Ismat Chughtai, Sardar Jafri and Krishan Chander.

After the Partition of India in 1947, he migrated to Lahore in 1948 where he was to die seven years later, fighting poverty and depression. 

His notable literary works include ‘Toba Tek Singh; Thanda Gosht; Bu; Khol Do; Kaali Shalwar; Hattak and some others.

He died in 1955, in Lahore, Pakistan. After his death, his unpublished manuscripts are collected and published in a volume called ‘Black Margins’. 0 0 0

Virginia Woolf 

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English novelist of the stream of consciousness genre. She was born in South Kensington, London. Her father’s name was Leslie Stephen and her mother’s name was Julia Prinsep Jackson. Her father was a distinguished literary man. She grew up in a large but talented family. She had got a favourable environment for her literary pursuit as her father had a library with a huge collection of books.  Besides this, many eminent men of letters frequented their house and she derived inspiration to get down to the field of literature. Her childhood was spent happily with her parents. Later on, she settled with one of her sister and two brothers in Bloomsbury, which became a meeting ground for several artistic and literary people.  One of them was Leonard Woolf, whom Virginia married, and with whom she founded a printing venture called Hogarth Press.

Her husband Leonard had a very sympathetic heart for her and inspired her to go on writing. She drew inspiration for her literary venture from her previous female writers. Her novels fall in the genre of the stream of consciousness novel. Through her writings, she explored the significance of identity, changes and human personality and unfolds the inner doings of the human brain. Virginia as a novelist is concerned about the position of women, especially professional women in society and the constraints they suffered. Some of her novels are ‘The Voyage Out’ (1915), ‘Night and Day’ (1919), ‘Jacob’s Room’ (1922), ‘Mrs Dalloway’ (1925), ‘To the Lighthouse’ (1927), ‘The Waves’ (1931) and some others.  She wrote several essays among which ‘A Room of One’s Own’ (1929) and ‘Three Guineas’ (1938) are worth mentioning. She had two collections of short stories also.

Wole Soyinka

Wole Soyinka (1935-) was a Nigerian poet, essayist, dramatist and critic. He was born near Ibadan in Western Nigeria in 1935. He was educated in Nigeria and at Leeds University in England. He founded the Orisun Theatre Company in 1964. In 1975, he became Professor of Comparative Literature at Ife University in Nigeria. In 1988 he joined the Cornell University as a Professor of African Studies. He was also a political critic and for that had been imprisoned more than once by the Nigerian government. Some of his literary works were proscribed and he was forced to leave his motherland. In 1997, the Nigerian military government passed a death sentence on him, but later on, it was revoked, and he returned to Nigeria in 1998.

Soyinka’s plays range from comedy to tragedy and from political satire to the theatre of the absurd kind. Among his well-known plays mention may be made of ‘The Road’ (1965) and ‘Death and the King’s Horsemen’ (1975). His poetry books include ‘Idanre and Other Poems’ (1967), ‘Poems from Prison’ (1969), ‘A Shuttle in the Crypt’ (1972) and ‘Mandela’s Earth and Other Poems’ (1988). His autobiographical work, ‘The Man Dies’ (1973) covers the period of his political imprisonment in Nigeria. Wole Soyinka has also published a collection of essays. For his contributions to Nigerian Literature, he was given the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. Wilfred Owen

Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) was an English soldier and poet. He wrote poetry on the theme of war. He was born at Plas Wilmot, near Oswestry in Shropshire and was educated at Shrewsbury Technical School and the Birkenhead Institute. He tried to get a scholarship to go to London University but failed. For some days he worked as a teacher and then he joined the Artists’ Rifles as a soldier in 1915. During the First World War, he fought in France in 1917 as a second lieutenant.  There he was severely wounded from a shell explosion and then he was sent to the War Hospital near Edinburgh to recover. There he met Siegfried Sassoon, an English war poet who encouraged him to go on writing poetry.

Owen returned to the Front in August 1918 and was soon awarded the Military Cross for bravery. But he was killed in the battlefield on 4th November 1918, seven days before the Armistice was signed.

Owen wrote poems off and on from his childhood but only five were printed while Owen was alive. After his death, Sassoon arranged for the publication of ‘Owen’s Collected Poems’ in 1920. 0 0 0

Eleanore Farjeon

Eleanore Farjeon was an English female poet, story-teller and playwright. She was born on 13 February 1881 in England. She had poor eyesight and suffered from ill-health throughout her childhood. She wrote especially for children. The theme of child psychology plays a dominant role in her writings. Her language and style is very simple and fascinating. ‘A Nursery in the Nineties’ is her autobiography. In the autobiography, she describes her family and her childhood.

Madhav Kandali

Madhav Kandali was a great Assamese poet of pre-Sankri Age. He was patronized by the fourteenth-century Barahi king Mahamanikya. Among the modern Indian Aryan languages, Madhav Kandali was the first to translate the Sanskrit ‘Ramayana’ into Assamese. Madhav Kandoliy said ‘Saptakanda Ramayana Padabdhe Nibondhilo’ (I have translated the Complete Seven Canto of the Sanskrit Ramayana), although only five of them are found. Later, Madhavadeva and Sankardeva completed Kandali’s Ramayana by translating the ‘Adikanda’ and ‘Uttarakanda’ respectively. Sridhar Kandoli

Sridhar Kandoli is a great post-Sankari Assamese Vaishnavite poet. The influence of Vaishnavism is evident in his poetry. Kandoli wrote two pieces of poetry called ‘Kankhowa’ and ‘Ghunucha Kirtan’. They are written after the style of a lullaby. In these poems, Hari Leela Mahatmya (the significance of the activities of Lord Vishnu) is described in a simple and clear language. The book can be divided into two parts. In the first part, Krishna fell asleep in fear of Kankhowa (a satan/monster), and in the second part, the poet has described the sullen speeches of Krishna as he was urged to get up from sleep by his mother. 0 0 0

Sankaradeva 

Sankaradeva (1449-1568) was the founder of Neo Vaishnavism, writer and social reformer. He was born in Alipukhuri, Bardowa in the district of Nagaon, Assam. His father’s name was Kusumbar Shiromani Bhuyan and his mother’s name was Satyasandhya. He lost his parents in his childhood and was brought up by his grandmother Khershuti.

At the age of twelve, Sankardeva was admitted to the ‘tol’ (home school) of a scholar named Mahendra Kandali. Within a very short time, he became proficient in Sanskrit.

In 1481, he went on a pilgrimage with 18 companions. During this pilgrimage, he visited most of the holy places of North India and returned to Assam after twelve years gaining spiritual knowledge by exchanging views with many Hindu gurus (religious teachers) of the time. After returning home, he started a new religion called Neo Vaishnavism based on the Bhagwat Gita with the intention of reforming Hinduism and social and religious life of Assam. ‘One God, one service, there is none to be worshipped except God’- is the motto of his religion. He went on to write literature as a medium of propaganda for his religion.

His works can be divided into the following types:

Kavya (Poetry): Harichandra Upakhyan, Rukminiharan Kavya, Balisalan, Amrit Manthan, Gajendra Upakhyan, Ajamil Upakhyan, Kurukshetra etc.

Devotional Books: Bhakti Pradeep, Nimi-Navsiddha Sangbad, Bhakti Ratnakar, Anadi Patan etc.

Nam Prashangas (psalms/hymns): Kirtan Ghosha, Gunamala etc.

Translated Books: ‘The Bhagwat’ and ‘The Uttarakanda Ramayana’ (from Sanskrit).

Ankia Nat (One Act Plays): Patni Prasad, Kaliya Daman, Kelly Gopal, Rukmini Haran, Parijat Haran and Ram Vijay.

Songs: Bargit, Bhatima.

The Kirtan Gosha is said to be his masterpiece.

Sankardeva had not only given a new religion to the Assamese national life but also made unique contributions to the Assamese literature, society and culture and thus gave a unique identity to the Assamese people.

Bhattadev 

The full name of Bhattadev (1558-1638 A D), the father of Assamese prose, is Vaikuntha Ram Bhagwat Bhattacharya. He was born in Veragram, Baranagar of Assam. His father’s name was Chandrabharati. At the behest of his father, he became a disciple of Sridamodar, a Vaishnav guru. He received the titles of ‘Kabiratna’ (Pearl of Poets) and ‘Bhagavat Bhattacharya’ from the ‘Pandit Samaj’ (Scholar Society) for his profound erudition in Bhagavata Geeta and in the interpretation of Hindu scriptures. He wrote, after the suggestion of his guru, ‘The Bhagavad Purana’, ‘The Gita’ and ‘the Bhakti Ratnavali’ in prose to be easily understood by the common people. In addition to these, he composed ‘Saran Malika’, ‘Guru Bansawali’, ‘Prasangawali’ in Assamese and ‘Bhaktisar’ and ‘Bhaktibibek’ in Sanskrit. No prose book was written in any North Indian language before Bhattadev. His prose, of course, is not as same as that of Buranji (history). Ajan Fakir 

Ajan Fakir was an Islamic saint. He came to Assam from Arabia in the early seventeenth century to spread Islam. Some guess that he came from Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. According to Surya Kumar Bhuyan the historian, Ahom King Gadadhar Sing cut out the eyes of Ajan Fakir as a man called Rupai Da-Dhara conspired against Ajan Fakir. Later, the greatness of his religion was realized by the king and the king rehabilitated him at Saraguri Sapari, Dikhaumukh. He devoted the rest of his life to preaching Islam and then he died there. Ajan Fakir is also known as ‘Shah Milan’ and ‘Shah Fakir’. Zikirs and Jaris (devotional songs) are said to be his works. Kabiraj Chakraborty 

Kabiraj Chakrabarty was an Assamese poet of the eighteenth century. He introduces himself, in the poem entitled ‘Shakuntala’ written by him, saying that he was the best among the Ahom poet laureate. He mentioned in his self-statement that he was a descendant of Kanwamuni. His father’s name was Ramananda and his mother’s name was Govinda Priya. In his self-statement, he called himself a ‘Servant of Vishnu’. From this, it is known that he was a devotee of Vishnu. He was one of the poet laureates of the Ahom king Rudra Singh and Shiva Singh. His real name was Ramnarayan Chakraborty. ‘Kabiraj’ was one of his titles. Why he got the title is not known. But this title refers to his poetic erudition or excellence. He taught the Hindu scriptures to Rudra Singh. At the request of Rudra Singh, he translated the ‘Geet Govinda’ to Assamese. After this, at the request of King Shiva Singh and Rani Fuleshwari, he composed the poem ‘Shakuntala’. In addition to these, he wrote ‘Shankhachur Badha’ and ‘Krishna Janmakhanda’ of the ‘Brahma Vaivarba Purana’. 0 0 0

Raghunath Chaudhary 

Raghunath Chaudhary (1879-1968) was an Assamese romantic poet. He was born in a village called Laupara near Mukalmuwar in Nalbari district, Assam. His father’s name was Bholanath Chaudhary. One day, in his childhood, he fell down the floor from the foundation of his home and become lame which lasted forever. Due to domestic difficulties, one of his relatives took the child Raghunath to Guwahati and enrolled him in a school. He read there up to class VIII and, being unable to cope up with the strict discipline of school life, he left school and began to teach at a school as a teacher but later on he took to farming and devoted himself to studying Bengali and Sanskrit literature at home. Then for some years, he became an Assistant Editor of ‘Jonaki’, a newspaper published from Guwahati. After then, he edited of ‘Maina’, ‘Jayanti’ and ‘Survi’

He began his literary career as a poet. His books of poetry are Sadri (1910), Keteki (1918), Karbala (1923), Dahikatara (1931), Navmallika (1958) and posthumously ‘Manai Bairagi’ and ‘Pachathiya’. He wrote poems on the themes of nature. He is also known as ‘Bihagi, (Bird) Poet’ because he wrote many beautiful poems on the theme of birds. Devakanth Baruah

Devakanta Baruah (1914-1996) was an Assamese romantic poet, politician and educationist. He was born in Dibrugarh. He received his B.A. and B. L. from Kashi University. He joined the ‘Ien Amanya Andolan’ in 1931 and was imprisoned for six months. He later entered politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha. He also served as the Governor of Bihar in 1970 and as the Union Education Minister in 1982.

Apart from being a politician, he was also a poet and journalist. His only book of poetry, ‘Sagar Dekhisha’, was published in 1948. The journey of Assamese romantic poetry, which began in the pages ‘Jonaki’, spread through the poetry of Devakant Baruah. For the first time in modern Assamese poetry, he made good use of the spoken language of daily life. He added a new dimension to modern Assamese poetry by using Robert Browning’s style of dramatic monologue in some of his poems. He is the poet of the late Romantic era and the gatekeeper of the modern era. This is why he is called the ‘Poet of Domoza’ (poet of two roads). Patriotism, the glorification of the past, selfless human love, etc. are the main themes of his poetry. 0 0 0

Harekrishna Deka

Harekrishna Deka (1943 -) is an Assamese poet, magazine editor and storyteller. He was born in Trinichukiya. He passed M. A. in English Literature from Guwahati University in 1975. He started his career as a lecturer in Commerce College, Guwahati and later on joined the Administrative Service and retired as a Director of Police.

He edited ‘Gariusi’ (a magazine) for some time The Sentinel (a newspaper). Amid his busy life, he devoted his time to literature and wrote several books. His books of poetry include ‘Ratir Shuvayatra’ (Night Parade), ‘Anya Ajon’ and ‘Sea-Scare’. He was also a good storyteller. His storybooks include- Galpa Aru Kalpa, Madhusudanar Dalang’ Mritudanda’ etc. ‘Agantuk’ is his only novel. He also translated several English books into Assamese.

He received the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ in 1986, the ‘Kotha Award’ in 1998 and the ‘Assam Valley Literary Award’ in 2010. 0 0 0

Nilmoni Phukan

Nilmoni Phukan (1880-1978) was an Assamese poet, prolific storyteller and orator. He was born in Dibrugarh. His father’s name was Lombodar Phukan. He completed his schooling in Dibrugarh and graduated from Kochbihar College. He edited ‘Alochani’ (magazine) published from Dibrugarh, ‘Sadiniya Batari’ (a weekly magazine) published from Jorhat and ‘Dainik Batari’ (Daily newspaper). Dimbeshwar Neog

Dimbeshwar Neog (1899-1966) was an Assamese poet, critic, researcher and historian. He was born in the Kamardafiya village of Shivsagar. His father’s name was Manik Chandra. He completed his schooling at Shivsagar and graduated from Cotton College and became a teacher in a government school. Later, he passed M. A. and B. T.  After that, he started teaching in different institutions and retired as a teacher. Since his college life, he began to write poems and essays on the magazine ‘Bahi’. Hem Baruah

Hem Baruah (1915-1977) was an Assamese politician, poet and writer. He was born in Tezpur. He passed the entrance examination from Tezpur Government High School and did his B.Sc. from Cotton College and M.A. from Calcutta University. He started his career as a lecturer at Jorhat College in 1940. He was also the editor of ‘Pashowa’ and the daily ‘Assam Express’. Bandita Phukan

Bandita Phukan (1947-) is an Assamese writer for children. In profession, he is an engineer. In addition to working in the Assam Gas Company, he worked, for two years, in the United States. He started his literary career by writing children’s literature. More than thirty of his children novels have been published so far. ‘Jayamati’ is his humorous book written in English. He was the first science fiction writer in North-east India.

Kulendu Pathak is a science writer and researcher. His birthplace is Nagarbera. He joined Cotton College in 1965 as a Professor in the Department of Physics. He held a doctorate from Birmingham University, England, for his research on Nuclear Elementary Particle Science.

He wrote many popular, informative and theoretical essays on various topics such as scientific progress, science education, and environmental issues. His most notable works are ‘Bijnan Aru Sahitya’ (Science and Civilization) (Volumes I and II), and ‘Asomiya Bigyan Sahitya’ (Assamese Science Literature).

Rathindranath Goswami

Rathindranath Goswami (1967-) is an Assamese writer. He was born in Jorhat. He graduated from Cotton College in 1987 with a first-class degree in Geology. He started his career by joining the Assam Administrative Service, although, later on, he resigned from the post and joined the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation as a geologist

He has written a number of books. Most of his writings are children’s literature. Some of his books include- ‘Bideshi Bandhur Deshat’, Kankinir Bidruh’, Bigyane Anib Juwar’, ‘Anka, Janka, Panka’, Rathin Mamar Ankar Maja’ etc. He is also well-versed in writing travelogues. Lakshminath Bezbaruah 

Laxminath Bezbaruah (1864-1936) was a multi-facet Assamese writer and nationalist. He was born in Ahatguri, undivided Nagaon district. He passed the entrance examination in 1886 from Shivsagar Government High School and went to Calcutta for higher studies. In 1891, he married Prajnasundari, the daughter of the famous Thakur family of Bengal. 

Lakshminath Bezbaruah was the pioneer of modern literature. He authored a number of books. He began to write articles in the ‘Jonaki’a literary magazine. His comic drama ‘Litikai’ and stories were published on the pages of ‘Jonaki’. His literary talent was multifacet. He was instrumental in establishing the Assamese language and literature in all forms of writing including poetry, plays, novels, short stories, humorous essays, essays, critiques, biographies, etc. His literary works can be categorized as follows:

Upendra Chandra Lekharu

Upendra Chandra Lekharu (1905-1989) was one of the leading scholars of Assamese Vaishnavite literature. Apart from Assamese, he also did M.A. in Bengali. After completing his education, he started teaching at Kamaldev High School in North Guwahati. Later on, he taught for a long time in the Assamese department of Cotton College and retired as a departmental head. He edited the ‘Katha Guru Charita’ a great prose work in the Assamese language. His notable books include ‘Assamese Ramayana Sahitya’, ‘Rajinikanth Bardalai’, and ‘Laxminath Bezbaruah’. He also made significant contributions to the field of translation. Some translated books by him are – Sri Sri Ramkrishnar Updesh, Dharmapada, and Anaka Ardena. He also edited some old Assamese books in a modern scientific manner that includes ‘Bhakti Vivek’ and ‘Kotha Sahitya’. He presided over the 37th session of the Asom Sahitya Sabha held at Dhinga in 1970.

Jatindranath Duwara 

Jatindranath Duwara (1892-1974) was an Assamese poet and the first author of prose-poem in Assamese. He was born in 1892 in Amolapatti, Shivsagar. In 1909, he passed the entrance examination from the Government High School, Shivsagar. He was admitted to Cotton College for higher studies, but later he moved to Calcutta to pursue a B.Sc. degree from Scottish Church College. Then he took to pursue M. A. and Law, but he returned home without completing his education. 

After returning home he started to teach at the Scottish Church Collegiate School. He also served as a part-time lecturer at Calcutta University. In 1945, Hanuman Box Surajmal Kanai College was established in Dibrugarh and Jatindranath Duwara was appointed as the Head Professor of the Assamese Department and he served there till his retirement.

Jatindranath Duwara took to writing from his student life. He was basically a poet. His poetry books are—Omar Tirtha, Apon Sur, Banaful, Milanar Sur and Maramar Sur. ‘Katha Kavita’ is his only book of poems in prose. This is the first book of poem in prose in the Assamese language. He received the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for his book ‘Banaful’. He is the first Assamese to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award. Fani Talukdar 

Fani Talukdar (1921-1996) was an accomplished writer, journalist, playwright, translator and film director of Assam. He was born in Barpeta. In 1938, he passed the entrance examination from Barpeta Government High School and obtained his B.Sc. from Cotton College. He took M A in English from Lucknow University. 

He started his career as an executive at the Shillong-Guwahati Radio centre. He retired from the post in 1985. He was also a skilled editor and edited Dainik Assam, Assam Bani, Agragati, Navdoot and Sapthahik Samay.

His published books are— Alokar Yatri, Prithivir Prem Aru Pramathesh Baruah. He also translated some books from Bengali, Hindi and English into Assamese. His translated books are – Asampurna, Pratham Raja and Aghari Avtara. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Translation Award’ for his ‘Aaghari  Avatar’. He was also the Head of Jyoti Chitraban and the President of Assam Natya Sanmilan.

Trilokyanath Goswami 

Trailokyanath Goswami (1906-1988) was a prominent Assamese story-teller and critic. He was born in Nalbari Satra. After completing his education, he became the principal of Nalbari College and began to write short story on the pages of ‘Abahan’ (magazine). His published short story books are—Aruna, Silpir Janma and Jibanar Jiya Jui. His stories depict the plight of the poor and the neglected classes of people. The language of Trilokyanath Goswami is rich. He has authored a number of theoretical and critical works that includes—Sahitya Alochana, Adhunik Galpa Sahitya, Nandan Tattba: Prachya and Pachchayatya, and Samudra Manthan. 

In addition to being the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, he won the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Assam Publishing Award.

Tirthanath Sharma 

Tirthanath Sharma (1911-1986) was a prominent Assamese educationist, story-teller, poet and essayist. He was a professor by profession and the founding principal of Pragjyotish College, Guwahati. He made various contributions to the world of Assamese literature. His books on various subjects and topics are—Mahatmar Bani, Sikhya Sar, Panchapushpa, Vaktibad, Auniati Satrar Buranji, Jhanjir Rani, Benudhar Sarmar Jibni etc. The books that he compiled and edited are Praveshiksha Kotha Chaneki, Sahitya Sangraha and Chaneki Path. He also wrote a book of poetry entitled ‘Kamsendur’. He wrote some short stories under pseudonyms. He was the President of the Makum Session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha (1971).

Bhabendranath Saikia 

Dr Bhabendranath Saikia (1932-2003) was a prominent Assamese storyteller, children’s writer, magazine editor, and filmmaker. He was born in Nagaon. He passed the entrance examination in 1948 and obtained his Intermediate and Bachelor’s Degrees from Cotton College and Guwahati University. After this, Bhavendranath Shaikia took his Doctorate from the University of London and a Diploma in Technology from London Imperial College.

He gained popularity through creative works. His notable collections of stories are Prahari, Brindaban, Gahbar, Shrinkhal, Taranga, Aei Bandor Aei Abeli, Akash, Upakantha and Sandyabhraman. He was also a prolific writer of novels. His novels are – Atankar Sekhat, Antarip and Ramyabhumi. His books for children are – Maramar Deota (novel), Santa Shishtha Hristha Pushtha Mahadushta (story and drama). He was also the editor of ‘Prantik’ and ‘Sanfura’ (magazines). 

In recognition of Bhabendranath Shaikia’s creative work, he was awarded the Assam Prakashan Parishad Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Assam Valley Award.

Dinesh Chandra Goswami 

Dinesh Chandra Goswami (1949 -) was an Assamese scientist and science writer.

Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami was born in 1949. He passed the matriculation examination from Rangiya High School and got his college education at Cotton College, Guwahati. He later completed his postgraduate and Ph. D. degrees in Physics from Guwahati University. After completing his education, Dr Goswami first served as a teacher at Cotton College. Later on, he served as a scientist at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi and then at the Regional Research Institute in Jorhat. He retired in 2009 as the Director and Scientific Advisor of the Regional Laboratory.

Dinesh Chandra Goswami had made special contributions to Assamese science literature. He has written about fifty books on popular science and science fiction. His notable books are – Boigyanik Mon and Boigyanik Manosikata, Satadik Mahan Bigyani, Jonakir Jilikani, Ushna Praba and Mohaniya Bishwabrahmanda

In addition to these books, he translated 18 books from English and other languages. He was the editor of a scientific magazine called ‘Drishti’ for several years. He was the editor-in-chief of three volumes of the ‘Encyclopedia of Science’ published by the Assam Sahitya Sabha. 0 0 0

Mofizuddin Ahmad Hazarika 

Mofizuddin Ahmad Hazarika (1870-1958) was the first Sufi philosophic poet in the Assamese language. He was born in Dibrugarh. In 1896, his first book of poetry, ‘Gyanmalini’, was published. Mofizuddin Hazarika is known, in the Assamese literary world, as ‘Gyanmalinir Kabi’ (‘Poet of Wisdom) after the title of his poetry book. The poems in the book of ‘Gyanmalini’ are mystic and spiritual in theme and spirit. Mafizuddin Ahmad Hazarika was the first poet in the Assamese language to express the Islamic Sufi ideology in poetry. In addition to publishing his ‘Gyanmalini’, he wrote some poems which have been published posthumously under the title ‘Tattva-Parijat’.

He was the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1930 during the Golaghat session.

Dhirendra Chandra Dutta 

Dhirendra Chandra Datta (1910-1972) was a prolific Assamese poet and communist revolutionary.

Dhirendra Chandra Dutt was born in Karunating Garden. His father’s name was Dr Sarat Chandra Dutta. Their home was in Bikrampur, near Dhaka, Bangladesh. While he was still a child, his parents migrated to Assam and settled at Baruwa Bamungaon in Golaghat. At the call of the motherland, Dhirendra Chandra Dutta got involved in the service of the country just after he completed his primary education. He was a believer in the communist ideology. He nursed the idealism of a true revolutionary in the interest of becoming a peasant.

The picture of pathos and struggle of the working class of people is reflected in his poems.

He died of tuberculosis at Civil Hospital, Jorhat in 1982. 0 0 0

Keshav Mahanta 

Keshav Mahanta (1926-2006) was an Assamese progressive poet and lyricist. He started his career as a teacher at Jamugurihat High School and retired as a publishing official of Guwahati University. His first book of poetry was ‘Amar Prithivi’. His other poetry books are – ‘Agantuk, Tomar Tej, Mour Sukan Kalijat Kunhipat, Rod Chikimiki, Kunwali Antari Ja, Dish Dawali Baran’, and ‘Bukut Ajak Dhumuha’. His ‘Mor Je Kiman Hempah’ is a collection of lyrics. Keshav Mohanta received the Sahitya Akademi Award for this book. He also wrote children’s literature. ‘Omala Ghar’ and ‘Maa Ami Sadiyaloi Jamei’ are his two books for children.

Nirmalprabha Bardoloi

Dr Nirmalaprabha Baradoloi (1933-2004) was an Assamese poet, lyricist and research scholar. She was born in Shivsagar. She took B.A. from Sandikai College and M.A. from Guwahati University. After completing his education, she started her career as a lecturer at B Baruah College, Guwahati and then became a Professor in the Assamese Department of Guwahati University. She retired as a Jawaharlal Nehru Professor from this university.

Nirmal Prabha Bardoloi started her literary career in the field of poetry. Her first book of poems was ‘Bon Firingar Jui’. His other books of poetry are – ‘Dinar Pachat Din’, Samipekhu’, ‘Antaranga’, and ‘Sudirgha Din Aru Ritu’. She was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poetry book ‘Sudirgha Din Aru Rati’. She was also skill-handed in composing songs. ‘Sonbaraniya Aai’ and ‘Suriya Mat’ are her two books of songs. ‘Devi, Siva and Surya’ is her notable research book.  He presided over the 1991 session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Ambikagiri Raychowdhury

Ambikagiri Raychowdhury (1885-1967) was an Assamese poet, lyricist, playwright, essayist, journalist and freedom fighter. He was born in the famous Raychowdhury family of Barpeta, Assam. Patriotism and mystic love are two salient themes of his poetry. The language and rhythm of his poems have their own power and vigour. His published books of poetry are – Veena, Tumi, Anubhuti, Bednaar Ulka, Bando Ki Chandere and Chetnar Kantha (book of song). He also edited two magazines ‘Chetna’ and ‘Deka Assam’.

In the world of Assamese literature, Ambikagiri Raychowdhury is known as ‘Assam Keshari’ (Lion of Assam). He was the President of the 21st Assam Sahitya Sabha Session. He was posthumously awarded the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for his book of poetry titled ‘Bednaar Ulka’.

Chandrakumar Agarwala

Chandrakumar Agarwala (1867-1938) was an Assamese lyricist and newspaper editor. He was born in Brahmajan, Kalangpur Mauza, Tezpur. Along with Laxminath Bezbaruah and Hemchandra Goswami, he published ‘Jonaki’ in 1889. In 1918, he started a weekly newspaper entitled ‘Asomiya’. Chandrakumar Agarwala died at his home in Guwahati in 1937.

Agarwala’s lyrical poem ‘Bankunwari’, was published in the first year-first issue of ‘Jonaki’. It inaugurated the tradition of Assamese romantic poetry. He was one of the pioneers of the literary movement of the Jonaki Era. His first book of poetry was called ‘Pratima’. Laxminath Bezbaruai, while discussing the book, said, “Pratima is small in size, but it is made of pure gold. ‘Bin Baragi’ is his second book of poetry. His poetry is characterized by a search for true beauty, love of humanity, optimism and by lyricism and simplicity of expression. 0 0 0

Sitanath Brahmachaudhury

Sitanath Brahmachaudhury (1908-1982) is one of the most influential Assamese Romantic poets. He was born in Bhalukmari, Gowalpara. 

He started practising poetry from an early age. His poetic works are ‘Kamalkali’, ‘Abeg’, ‘Chakulo’ and ‘Fuleshwari Daimari’. He wrote a book in prose under the titled ‘Gaon Sangathan’. Laxmidhar Sarma

Laxmidhar Sarma (1897-1938) was an Assamese patriot, freedom fighter and progressive writer. He was born in Bhir village of Bishwanath Chariali in Sonitpur district. After receiving his primary education in Tezpur, he passed the entrance examination from Cotton Collegiate School, Guwahati, securing the third position in Assam. He received his B.A. from Cotton College and a first-class M.A. in Indian language and literature from Calcutta. He studied law also. He started his career as a lawyer in Guwahati and Tezpur. 

He was influenced by the thoughts and philosophy of Karl Marx, Raja Rammohun Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Mahatma Gandhi and others. As a progressive writer, Laxmidhar Sarma wrote essays, short stories, dramas, biographies etc. and enriched the godown of Assamese literature. He has written short stories, essays, plays, biographies, etc. Communal solidarity, national consciousness, humanism, etc. are the main themes of his writings. 0 0 0

Dr Prafulla Chandra Goswami

Dr Prafulla Chandra Goswami (1919-1994) was an educationist, folk-culturalist, novelist, critic, travel writer, biographer and editor. He was born in Nahira Satra, South Kamarupa. His father Singhadatta Dev Adhikari was a prominent poet. He graduated with honours in English from Cotton College in 1940 and took his post-graduate degree in English from Calcutta University in 1944. He started his career as a teacher at Jagannath Baruah College, Jorhat. In 1945, he came to Cotton College as a professor of English. In 1948, he got an appointment as an English lecturer in the Commerce and B T Department of Guwahati University. Prafulla Chandra Goswami retired from the job in 1981. He also taught at Indiana University in the United States for some time in 1986. Dr Prafulla Chandra Goswami passed away in 1994.

Dr Prafulla Chandra Goswami had written a number of books in Assamese and English. Some of the notable books written by him in Assamese are Aei Yogar Sahitya, Sahitya Aru Jiban, Asomiya Jana Sahitya, Bilati Hoza, Kencha Patar Kanpani, Vejal Shun, Nite Nava Tar Rup, Bilatat Sat Mah, Shun Rupar Nahay Si Desh, Prithivir Chaupashe Apak, Mour Russia Vrahman, Europer Manisha, Manik Chandra Baruah, Ati Jiya Kahini,  Charai Binandia and Burunji Aaru Sanskriti.

Holiram Dhekial Phukan

Holiram Dhekial Phukan (1802-1832) was an Assamese lawyer and writer. His father’s name was Parashuram Baruah and his mother’s name was Kameshwari. He lost his father at an early age.  After the death of his father, he became, at the age of fourteen, Duwalia Baruah at Hadirachaki. After fighting the Mans (Burmese) with Chandrakanta Singh at Hadirachaki, the Ahom King gave him the title of ‘Dhekial Phukan’. In 1825 he was appointed as the Chief Collector under the East-India Company, but he resigned from the post after a quarrel with a British official. In 1832 he was appointed Assistant Magistrate in Guwahati. 

He was a good Bengali prose writer. The books he wrote in Bengali are—Assam Burunji, Tirtha Yatra Padhati, Samachar Chandrika, Samachar Darpan etc.

Rajanikanta Bardoloi 

Rajanikanta Bardoloi (1867-1940) is known in Assamese literature as the ‘Emperor of Novel’ and the ‘Scott of Assam’. He was born in Kukurmuta (Hedayetpur) in Guwahati. Being economically weak, he spent his childhood at his maternal uncle’s home and staying there, he passed the entrance examination from the Government High School, Guwahati. In 1887 he passed F A and B A from Metropolitan College, Calcutta. After completing his education, he joined Laxmipur as a land magistrate and retired as a district magistrate in 1918.

Since his childhood, Rajanikanta Bardoloi bore interest in writing and after completing his education, he took to writing novels beside his busy life. The novels he wrote are: ‘Rahdoi Ligiri, Miri Jiyari, Manomati, Danduwadroha, Nirmala Bhakata, Tamraeswari Mandir and Radha-Rukminir Ran’.All his novels, except ‘Miri Jiyari’. are historical novels. Rajanikanta Bardoloi, through his novels, portrayed the past of Assam vividly with some historical truth. By writing these novels he gave perfection to the tradition of Assamese novel and hence he is acclaimed as the ‘Emperor of Assamese Novels’. He wrote some humorous articles under the pseudonym ‘Bhulai Sarma’ in the magazines ‘Banhi’ and ‘Alochani’. Rajinikanth became the chairman of the eighth session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. 0 0 0

Balinarayan Bora

Balinarayan Bora (1852-1927) was an Assamese engineer and writer. He was born in North Guwahati. His father’s name was Datta Narayan Bora. He passed the entrance examination from the Guwahati Seminary in 1868.  Then he passed F A and went to London with a Gilchrist Scholarship. He graduated from Cooper Hill College with a degree in Civil Engineering and returned home. He later served as an Engineer in Bengal, Nagaon, Shivsagar and other places. He retired as a Superintendent Engineer in 1907.

While working in Nagaon, he began to publish a paper called ‘Mau’. The paper ceases to be published after its fourth issue. He authored several books in Assamese and English. One of his notable books in English is ‘A Geography of India’. His Assamese books are: ‘Bharatbarshar Burunji’ and ‘Asomiya Pravachana.’ 0 0 0

Kashinath Phukan 

Kashinath Phukan was born in the famous Kakati dynasty of Shivsagar. He wrote ‘Assam Buranji Puthi’ with the help of Radhanath Barbaruwa and Ahom language scholar Bailung Pandit. Yogesh Das

Yogesh Das (1928-1999) was an Assamese novelist and short story writer. He was born at Hanchara Garden in Dumduma. He received his primary education in a tea garden school. After taking Postgraduate in Assamese in 1949, he started teaching at Dumduma High School. In 1953, he got an appointment as a Professor of Assamese in B Baruah College, Guwahati and retired as the Head of the department.

In addition to teaching, Yogesh Dase became the Deputy Editor of ‘Natun Asomiya’ (newspaper), Assistant Editor of ‘Dainik Assam’, and Editor-in-Chief of ‘Prahari’ and ‘Adhinayaka’. Yogesh Das presided over the fifty-first session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. 

He wrote many novels and short stories. His novel ‘Dawar Aru Nai’ is a famous social novel. ‘Prithivir Asuk’ is one of his most famous collections of short stories. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for this collection of short stories.

Homen Babargohain  

Homen Bargohain (1932-) is a leading poet, storyteller, novelist, journalist and intellectualist of Assam. He was born in Dhaka. He graduated from Cotton College, Guwahati and took to teaching in a school for some years. Later on, he became an A C S official and worked under this post till 1968. But eventually, he devoted himself to journalism and writing. 

He has written a considerable number of books. Some of his notable novels are: ‘Subala, Tantraik’, ‘Kusilaba’, ‘Haladhiya Charaiye Bao Dhan Khay’, ‘Pita Putra’, ‘Timir Tirtha’, and ‘Saodar Puteke Nao Meli Yay’.  His only collection of poems is ‘Haimanti’. ‘Mour Sanbadik Jiban’ and ‘Anusandhan’ are his two autobiographies. He has also edited a number of books. Some books published under his editorship are- ‘Asomiya Sahitya’, ‘Asomiya Sahityar Burunji’, and ‘Gadyar Sadhana’.

Homen Bargohain has received several awards in recognition of his literary achievements. In 1968, he was awarded the ‘Assam Prakashan Parishad Award’ for his novel ‘Pita Putra’ (Father and Son), in 1978, the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ and in 1992, the ‘Assam Valley Literary Award’. In 2001, he was elected as the president of Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Satyanath Bora

Satyanath Bora (1860-1925) was a vigorous Assamese prose writer. He was born in Bharlumukh, Guwahati. He completed his schooling in Guwahati and took a B L degree from Calcutta in 1889. He taught temporarily at Earl’s Law College and Cotton College, but later on, moved to Guwahati to practise law.

The first book written by Satyanath Bora was ‘Gitavali’. Kendra Sabha, Sahitya Bichar, Sarathi, Chintakali etc. are some his essay books. ‘Akash Rahasya’, written by him, is the first science book in Assamese literature. He was a linguist also and wrote ‘Bahal Byakarana’ which is considered to be one of the notable grammars of the Assamese language. His prose is simple and enriched by the successful use of Assamese household words and homely phrases and idioms. He also wrote many beautiful poems. In 1901, he edited the Assamese magazine ‘Jonaki’ published from Guwahati.

Dr Banikanta Kakati

Dr Banikant Kakati (1894-1952) was a linguist, researcher, educator and literary critic. He was born in 1894 in the village of Batikuriha, Barpeta. From an early age, Kakati was able to make a name for himself in the field of education. He graduated with honours in English from the University of Calcutta and first joined Cotton College as a Professor and later became the Principal of the college. He was later appointed as the Head Professor of the Assamese Department of Guwahati University. He had made significant contributions to the academic environment of Cotton College and Guwahati University.

He studied both Eastern and Western literature and disciplined Assamese prose. Banikanta Kakti’s literary work is vast and protean. Among his literary works mention may be made of ‘Asomiya Purani Sahitya’, ‘Sahitya Aru Prem’, ‘Kalita Jatir Eitibritya’, ‘Purani Kamrupar Dharmar Dhara’, Pakhila’ and Natun Asomiya Sahitya’.

In addition to writing these books in Assamese, he wrote a number of books in English also. Some of his English books include ‘The Mother Goddess Kamakhaya, Visnuit Myths and Legends, and Assamese: Its Formation and Development’. He earned a doctorate by the book ‘Assamese: Its Formation and Development’. By writing this thesis he gave a systematic form to the Assamese language. Banikanta Kakati introduced new scientific trends in the field of critical literature.

Kaliram Medhi

Kaliram Medhi (1878-1954) was an Assamese educator, linguist, magazine editor and researcher. He was born in a village called Ramdia near Hazo. He graduated from City College, Calcutta with a Master Degree in Physics and started his career as a Deputy Collector. For his efficiency and dedication to duty, he was promoted to E. L. C. Although he kept busy in his job, he devoted his free time to literary pursuits. Though he was a student of physics, he worked for the benefit of the Assamese language. He authored ‘Asomiya Bhashar Byakaran Aru Bhakhatattba’, which is a unique book on the Assamese language. He edited some books among which mention may be made of: ‘Ankawali, Prahlad Charita and Mahapurusa Sankardevar Bani’. He had also written some articles in English. He presided over the Barpeta session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1919.

Dr Birinchi Kumar Baruah 

Dr Birinchi Kumar Baruah (1910-1974) is a researcher, literary critic, storyteller, novelist and educator. He was born in Nagaon. He held a doctorate from the University of London for his research work entitled ‘A Cultural History of Assam’. He had rich knowledge of the Pali language.

After completing his formal education he took up an administrative job at Guwahati University. Apart from doing administrative work at Guwahati University, he also taught Assamese. He had written a number of valuable books in Assamese and English. He wrote many stories on ‘Abahan’ (magazine) under the pseudonym ‘Bina Baruah’. ‘Aghoni Bai’ and ‘Pot Parivartan’ are his two short story books. Under the pseudonym ‘Bina Baruah’, he wrote a novel titled ‘Jeevanar Batat’. He wrote another novel entitled ‘Seuji Patar Kanpani’ under another pseudonym ‘Rasna Baruah. He even wrote two travelogues entitled ‘Switzerland Brahman’ and ‘Americar Chithi’. Among his research books mention may be made of-‘Asomar Loka Sanskriti, Asomiya Katha Sahitya, Boudha Dharma Aru Sahitya and Asomiya Bhakha Aru Sanskriti’. He authored several books in English that include: ‘Assamese Literature, A History of Assamese Literature, Studies in Ancient Assamese Literature and Sankardev: A Vaisnavite Saint of Assam’. Upendra Nath Goswami (1923-2000) is an Assamese linguist, researcher and critic. He was born in Nalbari Satra. Initially, he taught at Kanai College and Cotton College. He later joined the Assamese Department of the University of Guwahati and retired as the head of the Department. He had written several research books on linguistics in English. His most notable books are: A Study on Kamrupi: A Dialect of Assamese, An Introduction to Assamese. He also wrote some books in Assamese, as: Bhakha Bigyan, Bhakha Aru Sahitya, Asomiya Bhakhar Rupakatha, Asomiya Bhakhar Byakaran, Asomiya Lipi, Asomiya Bhakhar Udbav, Samridhi Aru Bikash, Vaishnava Vakti-dhara and Santa Katha.

Subodh Malla Baruah

Subodh Malla Baruah (1963-) is a sports journalist and sports writer from Assam. He was born in 1973. His father’s name was Paresh Malla Baruah. He was educated at the Cotton Collegiate School and Arya Vidyapeeth in Guwahati and entered the world of sports journalism in India. Since 1986, he has been the Deputy Editor of ‘Ajir Assam’ and ‘Natun Dainik’. In 1991, he joined the ‘Dainik Asom’ newspaper. Pranoy Bardolaoi (1964-) is an Assamese journalist, newspaper editor, environmentalist, mountaineer and writer. He was born in Guwahati. Dr. Lakshmi Nandan Bora

Dr Laxminandan Bora (1931-) is a newspaper editor, educator, storyteller and novelist. He was born in Hatichong, Nagaon district. He graduated from Cotton College after passing the entrance examination from Nagaon Government High School and obtained his doctorate from Andhra University in 1968. After teaching in several colleges, he retired from Assam Agricultural University as a Professor of Physics. 

Dr Laxminandan Bora, who was established in the Assamese literary world during the ‘Ramadhenu’ era, published several storybooks and novels. His storybooks are: Dristirupa, Sei Sure Utala, Aei Rup Aei Chanda, Arabarir Lecheri etc. His published novels are—Ganga Chilanir Pakhi, Nishar Purvi, Yakeri Nahike Upam, Sehi Gunanidhi and Patal Vhairavi.

He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967 for his novel ‘Patal Bhairavi’. He was recently awarded the ‘Saraswati Award’ of Birla Foundation for his later novel ‘Kayakalpa’. Dr. Laxminandan Bora was elected the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1996. He also edits several papers as a journalist and serves as the Chairman of the State Pollution Control Board. 0 0 0

 Madan Mohan Saikia

Madan Mohan Saikia is a researcher, educator and writer. He was born in 1935. He passed M.Sc. from Guwahati University. He was conferred an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Petroleum and Chemistry in undivided Russia in 1975. After serving some days at the ONGC of the Institute of Research and Training in Dehradun, Shaikia joined Jorhat Regional Laboratory and worked as a mentor in the Department of Geo-sciences. After retiring, he served for three years as a Guest Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, University of Guwahati. Bhavananda Dutt 

Bhavananda Dutt (1917-1959) was an Assamese progressive poet, literary critic, Marxist thinker and educator. He was born in Ratanpur village of Kamarup. He graduated from Cotton College and then passed M A in Philosophy from the University of Calcutta in 1944. This was followed by a career in teaching at Nalbari College. He later served as a professor in Cotton College and then in Guwahati University. 

Since his student life, he inclined to reading and writing. Some books written by him are:  Rabindra Pratibha, Dristi Aru Darshan, Asomiya Kabitar Kahini, Asamar Jatiya Samasyar Bivartana, and ‘Philosophy of India’. His writings reflect Marxist ideology, the stigma of society, economic inequality between the rich and the poor and the pity of the exploited and oppressed.

Uttam Baruah

Uttam Baruah (1939-2011) is a prominent Assamese writer and playwright. He was born in Azara, Guwahati. His father’s name was Chandra Baruah and his mother’s name was Rajini Baruwa

Since his student days, he took to writing poems and plays and earned the admiration of all. While in the seventh standard, he wrote a book entitled ‘Mahapurushar Namghar’ and was praised by the eminent poet of the time, Nilmani Phukan. His first play, Bar Manuhar Dola was published in 1960. After this, he wrote many successful plays. Notable among them are: Barraja Fuleshwari, Hengdang, Jerengar Sati, Champakar Sati, Lachit Bar Phukan, Kushal Konwar, Gomdhar Konwar, Laila Majnu, Mula-Gavru, Panditar Jivan, Ajir Manuh, Madyabittar Sansar, Momai Tamuli Barbaruah, Dristipat, Paribaror Biya, Chor, Moidam Jigyasa, Devdasir Jivan Jigyasa etc. In addition to these successful stage plays, Uttam Baruah also wrote some plays for radio.

Apart from writing plays, he also wrote theoretical articles in the newspapers such as Nilachal, Ranghar, Purbachal, Dainik Assam, Asambani, Agradoot and others. Uttam Baruah, through his writings, not only glorified the past of Assam but also exposed the corruption of Assamese society.  

He received numerous state and national awards in recognition of his works. In addition, he received the honour of great personality of the year 2000 from the American Biographical Institute. He also received the ‘Karmashree Award’ from Jyotirupa and honour from the Radhagobind Sports Association. He was also nominated a member of the Raja Rammohun Roy Foundation of Calcutta.

 Suryakumar Bhuyan

Suryakumar Bhuiyan (1892-1964) was a scholar, researcher, writer and historian from Assam. He was born in Nagaon. In 1909, he matriculated from Shillong Government School securing the first position in the Assam Valley and won the Victoria Memorial Gold Medal. Suryakumar Bhuiyan passed I. A. from Cotton College in 1911 and graduated from Presidency College, Calcutta in 1913 with honours in English. Then he passed Post-graduate in English literature from Calcutta University in 1918. After that, he joined the teaching profession at Bezbaruah School in Jorhat. Two years later, he got an appointment as a Professor of English at Cotton College and in 1947 he became the Principal of Cotton College. Surya Kumar Bhuiyan was the first Assamese professor and principal of Cotton College. He went to England in 1936 to pursue research and gained a doctorate degree from the University of London. In 1952, he received an honorary D. Litt degree from the same university. In the same year, he was elected the President of Modern History Branch of the Indian History Congress held at Guwalior. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1952 and was awarded the ‘Padma Shri’ in 1956. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Guwahati University from 1956 to 1970. He was also the President of the Shillong Session (1953) of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Surya Kumar Bhuiyan, who had been known for his talents since his student days, first made his debut as a poet, though later on, he became well-known as a historian. He contributed a lot to the development of Assamese language and literature by writing many valuable books. His only book of poetry is ‘Nirmali’. He also wrote some short stories. His only collection of short stories is entitled ‘Panchami’. ‘Tripadi’ and Suryakumar Bhuiyanar Bibid Prabandha’ are his two essay books. He also wrote biographical books. His biographical books are: Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Anandaram Baruah, Assam Jiyari, Jonaki and Chaneki. He authored a number of historical and informative books, including: ‘Kunwar Bidruh, Burunjir Bani, Ramani Gavaru, Mirjumalar Asom Akraman’ and ‘Lachit Barphukan’.

In addition to writing books in Assamese, he authored several notable books in English, such as An Assamese Nur Jahan, Early British Relations with Assam, Lachit Borphukan and His Times, Atan Borgohain and His Times, Men I Have Met and London Memories. In addition to those books, Suryakumar Bhuyan edited several historical books.

Shilvadra 

Shilvadra (1924-2008) was a well-known Assamese story-teller. His real name was ‘Revati Mohan Dutta Choudhury’. ‘Shilbhadra’ was his pseudonym. He was born in Gauripur, Dhubri district, Assam. After passing the entrance examination, Shilbhadra studied science at Cotton College. He later graduated from Carmichael College, Bangladesh with a degree in Mathematics. In 1946, he passed the post-graduate examination from the University of Calcutta in Mathematics. He joined Cotton College in 1947 as Professor of Mathematics. After two years of teaching there, he worked for a while as a contractor, journalist and assistant manager of a tea garden. Then he joined the Assam Engineering College as a Professor in 1958 and retired from the same post in 1982.

Shilbhadra began his literary career by writing a novel. His first collection of novels, ‘Madhupur’ and ‘Tarangini’, was published in 1971. In 1975, his first collection of short stories titled ‘Bastav’ was published. Since then, he published more than a dozen collections of short stories. Some of them are: Samudrar Tir, Kuno Khed Nai, Uttaran, Akou Madhupur, Madhupur Bahu Dur, Tarpan, Chithi Aru Anyannya Galpa, Apon Manuh, Jibanar Rang, Dayitya Aru Anyannya Galpa etc. Shilbhadra translated some books from English into Assamese under the titles ‘Ripvan Winkle Aru Keitaman Galpa’ and ‘Rupantar’.

In recognition of his literary work, Shilbhadra was honoured with several awards. In 1990, he won the Assam Sahitya Parishad Award for his novel ‘Anusandhan’ and in 1992, he received the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award’ for his collection of short stories entitled ‘Dayitba Aru Anyannya Galpa’. In 1994, Shilbhadra won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection of short stories ‘Madhupur Bahudur’. Utpal Dutt 

`Utpal Dutt (1960-) is an Assamese writer, translator, documentary director and film critic. His most notable books are ‘Chalachitra’ and ‘Twenty Four Frames’. In addition to these, he has edited a number of books on film and two among them are prescribed as reference books for the Degree classes of Tezpur University. Utpal Dutt has also earned a reputation as a documentary director. The documentaries he directed have been exhibited at several film festivals in India and abroad. He has also been honoured with the state-level award for Best Documentary Director. Sayed Abdul Malik

Sayed Abdul Malik (1919-2000) was a prominent Assamese novelist and story-teller. He was born in Naharan, Golaghat district. After Matriculation from Jorhat Government High School, he passed B A from Cotton College, Guwahati. Then he took to work in the Department of Excise and then at the Radio Centre, Guwahati. After this, he passed M.A. in Assamese from Guwahati University and started teaching at Jagannath College, Jorhat. He retired from the same post and served the nation as a Member of Rajya Sabha.

From the time he was in school, he started writing activities and wrote a number of novels and short stories. Some of his books are Parasamani, Adharasila, Aghari Atmar Kahini, Maraha Ful, Suruymukhir Sapna, Rupatirthar Yatri, Dhanya Naratanu Val, Sbaksara, Chabighara, Ranagaraa, Rajanigandha, Chakulo etc. Sayed Abdul Malik’s novel ‘Aghari Atmar Kahini’ won him the Sahitya Akademi Award. Through his writings, the image of a declining society, the compassion of love and the tone of humanity are revealed vividly. His language is characterized by simplicity and homely words and phrases. Sayed Abdul Malik presided over the Abhayapuri session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Hemant Kumar Sarma

Hemant Kumar Sarma (1932-1992) was a devotee of Assamese culture, prolific prose writer, critic and researcher. He was born in Piplibari village, Nalbari. He passed M A in Assamese and went on to teach in the Assamese department, Cotton College. He was involved in Assam Sahitya Sabha, Assam Janakristi Samaj and various cultural institutes. Dr Hemant Kumar Sharma had written and edited more than twenty books. His most notable books are: Asomiya Sahityar Dristipat, Asomiya Sahityar Rengani, Sahitya Bichitra, Saityar Jeoti, Kaverir Pare Pare, Smritir Palash, Sei Maladari, Rakhi Bandhan, Sandhyarag, Jivni Saurav etc. He also compiled and edited some books as Kamrupi Lok Geet Sangrah, Kingvadantir Sadu, Asomiya Lokageeti Sanchayana etc.

Dr Nabin Chandra Sarma

Dr Nabin Chandra Sarma (1938-) was a researcher of folk literature and culture of Assam and prolific prose writer. He was born in Hazarikapara village in Chipajhar of   Darang district. After completing his primary education at his hometown, he passed the entrance examination from Chipajhar High School. After that, he took a B.Sc. degree from Arya Vidyapeeth College. Then he passed M. A. from Guwahati University and got an appointment in the same university and retired as a professor of Folk Culture from there. 

He authored a number of books on Assamese folk-lore and folk-culture. He revived the defunct Ujapali program in Assam by writing and publishing a book titled ‘Asomor Ujapali. Dr Nabin Chandra Sarma travelled to California, USA in search of folklore. He authored and edited 96 books, including folk and old literature. Some of the books written by him are– Asomiya Sahityar Alok Rekha, Asomiya Bhasha Aru Sahityar Ruparekha, Purani Asomiya Sahityar Alok Rekha, Asomiya Pachali Sahitya, Asomiya Lok Sanskritir Avash, Asomor Ujapali etc. The notable books he edited are Daranga Raajabansawali, Adi Dasham, Siva Purana, Kalika Purana, Asomia Madvagawat Geeta etc. 

In recognition of his literary services, Navin Chandra Sarma received Durgabar Barkatki Award, Sitanath Brahma Chowdhury Award, Bharatiya Bhasha Sahitya Award, Srimanta Sankardev Research Award, and Silpi Gandharam Bayan Award. In addition to these, he received the honours like Emeritus Fellowship, Member of Assam Sahitya Sabha Mahiyan, and Literary Pension. 0 0 0

Ratnakanta Barkakati

Ratnakanta Barkakati (1897-1963) was an Assamese poet, critic and essayist. In the literary circle of Assam, he is known as ‘Sewalir Kabi’(Poet of Night Jasmine) after his first poetry book ‘Sewali’. He was born in Dhing, Nagaon. He passed the entrance examination from a local school and went to Calcutta for higher studies, although he dropped out of school and joined the Indian Independence Movement. 

He began to practise writing form his student life and wrote poetry on the pages such magazines as Usha, Banhi, Chetana etc. He published his first poetry book entitled ‘Sewali’ in 1932. Later on, he wrote two other poetry books entitled ‘Tarpan’ and ‘Chandrahar’. He also composed an emotional drama titled ‘Alaka’. Beauty in nature and love are the two main themes of his poems.

Hiren Bhattacharya 

Hiren Bhattacharya (1932-2012) was a very influential modern Assamese poet, lyricist, magazine editor and writer of children-literature. He was born in Jorhat. His father’s name was Tirthanath Bhattacharya and his mother’s name was Snehalata Bhattacharya. He completed his primary education at Dibrugarh and passed the entrance examination from Cotton Collegiate High School, Guwahati. Then he passed I A from B Baruah College, Guwahati and then making and end to his formal education, he started working to earn a living. Some days he worked in a printing press and some days he taught at a school. From an early age, he was associated with the ‘Bharatiya Gan-Natya Sangh’ and was influenced by progressive thought. 

Hiren Bhattacharya, whose mind was bending towards writing poetry since his student days, had written many books of poetry. His most notable books of poetry are:  Raudra Kamna (1974), Mor Desh Mor Premar Kabita (1972), Bivinna Dinar Kabita (1974), Kabitar Rod (198), Sugandhi Pakhila (1971), Shaichar Pathar Manuh (1991), Valpowar Boka Mati, Jonali Mon Aru Ananya Kabita, Priya Barnamala etc. 

Hiren Bhattacharya was also a successful lyricist. ‘Tomar Gaan’ is a book of songs by him. He also wrote a number of children’s books, such as- ‘Lara Dhemali’ (1992) and Akau Dhemali (1993). Hiren Bhattacharya won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1991 for his book ‘Shaichar Pathar Manuh’. He edited the magazines ‘Chitraban’, ‘Antrik’, and ‘Khanan’.

The primary theme of his poems is love: love to motherland, love to man and love to nature. Hiren Bhattacharya’s poetry is full of innovation in using words phrase and imagery. His contemporary and younger poets were greatly influenced by his poetic style.

Bhupen Hazarika

Bhupen Hazarika (1927-2011) was an Assamese lyricist, singer, actor, film director, essayist and magazine editor. He was born in Shadia. After passing the entrance examination from Tezpur High School in 1940, he completed his I A. from B Barua College. Then he passed B. A. and M. A. from Varanasi Hindu University. Later on, he did Ph. D. from Columbia University, USA. During his stay in the USA, he met Priyambada Patil, a daughter of an Indian businessman, and eventually married her. A son, Tej Hazarika was born as a witness to their married life.

After the birth of Tej, Priyambada left him forever. Then he started teaching at B Baruah College, Guwahati and then at Guwahati University for some time. For some days, he also served at Akashbani Kendra, Guwahati. Eventually, he devoted himself to arts and music and became a singer, lyricist, film director and music director. In 1980, he was introduced to Kalpana Lajmi a young woman and she remained Bhupen Hazarika’s lifelong companion ever since.

The films directed by Bhupen Hazarika are: Erabatar Sur (1956), Shakuntala (1961), Pratidhavani (1964), Latighati (196), Chikmik Bijuli (1969), Chiraj (1988) etc. He also directed several Hindi and Bengali films. He also directed nine documentaries.

He was also a writer. He wrote fifty books. He was a life-long member of the Assam Sahitya Sabha and was elected its president in 1993. He edited some magazines also as-Pratiddavani, Bindu and Pratinidhi.

Bhupen Hazarika was also involved in politics. He served as an MLA from 1967 to 1972 in the Naobaicha Constituency.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of music and film, he had received a numerous national and international awards and honours such as the President’s Medal of India, the National Award for Best Music Director, Dada Chaheb Phalke Award, Padmasri and some others. 

His contribution to the art and culture of Assam is greater than that of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Kalaguru Vishnu Prasad Rabha.

Padmanath Gohain Baruah

Padmanath Gohain Baruah (1871-1946) was an Assamese playwright, essayist and novelist. He was born in Nakari village in Lakhimpur district. After completing his primary education at Shivsagar and Kahima, he went to Calcutta for higher studies. But due to various difficulties, he could not complete his education and returned home. While he was in Calcutta, Gohain Baruah started editing a magazine called ‘Bijuli’. His novels ‘Vanumati’ and ‘Lahari’ were published part by part in this magazine.

Returning from Calcutta, he first concentrated on literary activities at home. He, later on, joined Kahima Government English School as a Headmaster. After that, he was appointed as the Headmaster of Normal School in Tezpur, then as a Tehsildar of Mangaldoi and then became an Honorary Magistrate.

Padmanath Gohain Baruah, a man of high literary genius, wrote a number of books and enriched the godown of Assamese literature. Some of the books he wrote are:

Drama: Gaonbura, Teton Tamuli, Jayamati, Gadadhar, Sadhani and Lachit Barphukan .

Theoretical Books: Lord Krishna.

Autobiography: Mur Suwarani.

Novel: Bhanumati and  Laharai.

In addition to ‘Bijuli’, he edited ‘Assam Banti’ and ‘Usha’. Padmanath Gohain Baruah was the first president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha established in 1917. He presided over the first session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha held at Shivsagar.

M Ibrahim Ali

M Ibrahim Ali (1817-1975) was an educator and writer from Assam. He was born in Shingimari village near Chipajhar. His father’s name was Abid Ali and his mother’s name was Amina Khatun. He studied up to class VIII at Mangaldoi High School and then enrolled in Jorhat Normal School. Later on, he passed M. A. privately. His career was diverse. First, he became a teacher, then a school sub-inspector. He also served in the military.

M Ibrahim Ali was a prolific writer also and wrote poetry, biography, novel and children’s literature. His poetry books are Chahara (1948), Nistabadha and Bishad. His children’s novel, which won him the President’s Award, was Pari Kunwarir Deshat (1955). He also edited a magazine for children entitled ‘Kanchijon’.

Pankaj Dutt is an Assamese teacher and writer. He was born in Haribhanga village in Nalbari district. After completing his schooling in a local school, he went to Guwahati for higher studies and passed B Sc with honours in Physics from Arya Vidyapith College, Guwahati. Pankaj Dutta is involved in composing and editing school books. He is an accomplished teacher and is closely associated with the National Children’s Science Festival. Binandachandra Baruah

Binandachandra Baruah (1901-1994) was an Assamese poet, playwright and children’s writer. He was born in Tiyak. His father’s name was Gopalchandra Baruah. He completed his schooling in Tiyak and Jorhat and graduated from Cotton College, Guwahati with honours in History. Then he went to Calcutta to study M. A. and law. But he returned home without completing his education. After returning home, Binandachandra Baruah started his career as a teacher at Janji High School and retired in 1989 as its headteacher. Binandachandra Baruah was closely associated with the Assam Sahitya Sabha and became the chairman of its the North Lakhimpur session.

He wrote many poems, plays, short stories, humours, children’s books etc. His poetry books include: ‘Sankhadhabani’ (1925), ‘Pratidhabani’ (1937),) ‘Jayadhabani’ (1974) and ‘Shishudhwani’ (1977). He wrote two plays as ‘Partha Sarathi’ and ‘Sharaighat’. ‘Ti Ti Hei’ and ‘Bengenar Rahasya’ are his humorous writings. He was skilled handed in writing children literature among which the noteworthy books are- ‘Maharaj Naranarayan, Larar Bezbaruah, Asom Gaurav, Aamar Gaurav, Aamar Laxminath’ and ‘Rajasthanar Galpa’ etc.

Durgeshwar Sarma

Durgeshwar Sarma (1884-1961) was an Assamese poet and playwright. He was born in Patiya village of Jorhat. His father’s name was Kamaleshwar Sharma. He completed his schooling in Jorhat and obtained his B. A. from Kochbihar College. After a long career as a senior government official in various departments, he retired in 1903 as a member of the Excise Commission. 

Durgeshwar Sarma wrote two poetry books under the titles of ‘Anjali’ and ‘Nibedan’. As a playwright he wrote some plays from his own and translated some plays form other languages. Among his plays mention may be made of ‘Partha Parajay’ (1909), ‘Chandravali’ (1910), ‘Padmavati’(1922) and ‘Balibadh’ (1922). Durgeshwar Sarma is known as a ‘philosophic poet’ in the Assamese language for the predominance of philosophical themes in his poetry. 0 0 0

Hiteshwar Barbaruah

Hiteshwar Barbaruah (1876-1939) was a famous Assamese poet. He was born at Saru Charaibahi near Jorhat. He started his career as a teacher after getting his schooling in Jorhat. Later he started working in a tea garden. His books include ‘Dhopakali’, ‘Tirotar Atmadana’, ‘Atmadana’, ‘Dechdimona’, ‘Yudhvakhetrat Ahom Ramani’ and ‘Ahomar Din’. In 1924, Hiteshwar Barbaruah was elected the president of the History branch of the Assam Sahitya Sabha session held at Nagaon. 0 0 0

Jnannath Bora

Jnannath Bora (1890-1968) was an Assamese writer and literary critic. He was born in Guwahati. His father’s name was Satyanath Bora and his mother’s name was Bhuvan Mohini. He was inspired by his father Satyanath Bora (who was a prominent Assamese prose writer) to study literature. He passed B A from Cotton College and B L from Earl Law College. He first practised law in Guwahati and then for twenty years in the Calcutta High Court

He wrote such books as, ‘Asomat Bideshi’, Yugatatva’, ‘Purani Asomiya Sahitya’, ‘Adhunik Asomiya Sahitya’ etc. Jnannath Bora was the president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha session in Tezpur in 1968.

Anuradha Sarma Pujari 

Anuradha Sarma Pujari is one of the leading novelists, storytellers, journalists, educators and magazine editors of Assam.

He was born in 1964 in Jorhat. He completed his primary education in Jorhat and graduated from Devicharan Baruah College, Jorhat. Then he attained M. A. degree in Sociology from Dibrugarh University and a Diploma in Journalism from the Birla Institute of Liberal Arts and Management, Calcutta. 

He started his career as a teacher under the Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta. After this, he started working as a journalist for ‘Amar Asom’. He edited the magazines as- ‘Sadin’ and ‘Satsari’ for some years.

Anuradha Sarma Pujari has written many novels besides to her busy career as a journalist. His most notable novels are: Hridoy Ek Bigyapan’, ‘Chaheb Purar Barsun’, ‘Kanchan’, ‘Nahar Niribili Chan’, ‘Boragi Nadir Bat’, ‘Mereng’, ‘Sun Harinar Chekur’  etc. In addition to writing novels, he is an accomplished story-teller also. His published storybooks are: ‘Basantar Gan, Ajan Asamajik Kabir Biography, Ketherinar Saite Ati Nirjan Dupariya, No Men’s Land’ etc.

He has published some collections of autobiographical essays, as: ‘Kalikatar Chithi’, ‘Dayeri’ and ‘Autograph’. For his novel ‘Chaheb Purar Barsun’, he won the ‘Kumar Kishore Sovarni Banta’ of Assam Sahitya Sabha. In 2013, he was awarded the ‘Renaissance Assam Award’ in recognition of his literary and news services. Recently, he is honoured with the Vishnu Rava Award. 0 0 0

Dr Jayant Kumar Goswami

Dr Jayant Kumar Goswami is a renowned physician and author. He was born in 1958 in Shillong. He studied at the Medical College, Guwahati and became MBBS and M S (surgery). After this, he attained MCH (Pediatric Surgery) degree from All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi. Dr Jayant Kumar Goswami is currently working in Guwahati Medical College as the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery.

Besides his busy life, he has been contributing stories, novels and essays to Assamese literature. He has written a number of short stories. His notable story books are: ‘Anubanshik’ (2010), ‘Pakhilamon’ (2011), ‘Mritu Upatakya’ (2013), Talbari’r Dinboor’ (2013), ‘Pratibimba’ (2014) and ‘Kayantara’ (2016). His essay books are: ‘Sishur Ashrupasar’, (2011) and ‘Vigyan Barnali’ (2011). His only published novel till now is ‘Mrigatrishna’ (2013). Dharmeshwari Devi Baruwani

Dharmeshwari Devi Baruwani (1892-1960) was an Assamese poet. She was born at Panchavati Ashram in Guwahati. Her Father’s name was Yagyaram Sarma and mother’s name is Rambhapriya Devi. Her worldly life was very miserable. He studied literature at home and composed many poems. Her poetry books are: ‘Phular Sharai’, ‘Pranar Parash’, ‘Ashrudhar’ and ‘Jeevanatari’. Sarbeshwar Kataki

Sarbeshwar Kataki (1892-1946) was an Assamese poet, researcher and educator. He was born in Guwahati. His father’s name was Yogeshwar Kataki and his mother’s name was Draupadi. He was educated in Cotton Collegiate High School and in Cotton College, Guwahati. After completing his education, he took up the job of a teacher at Cotton Collegiate High School in 1921 and worked there till the end of his life. Sarbeshwar Kataki wrote essays on ‘Abahan’, ‘Chetna’ and ‘Banhi’. His books are: Murli (Poetry-1921), Tattva Aru Tathya (1926), Antiquities of Assam, Ancient Assamese Scripts, Hemchandra Baruaher Jivni, (1923), Satyanath Borar Jivan Charita, (1929) and “Raasa-krira (drama). Sarbeshwar Kataki was, for a long time, the secretary of the Kamarup Research Society.

Rajendranath Deka

Rajendranath Deka is a researcher and writer. He was born in 1977 in the village of Kamarupa. His father’s name was Padmaram and his mother’s name was Sumitra. He received his schooling in Dao Gaon and Puthimari and received his college education at Rangiya College. Later, he took M Sc degree from Guwahati University in Electronics and Communication Technology and M Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He has been appointed as the Senior Executive Director, Department of Science and Technology, University of Guwahati and is currently engaged in research work on biofuels. Hemchandra Goswami

Hemchandra Goswami (1872-1928) was a poet, writer and devoted research scholar of Assam history. Hemchandra Goswami was born in the Dhekiyal village, Golaghat. His Father’s name was Dambrudhar and mother’s name was Ghankanti. After completing his High School education in Assam, he went to Calcutta for higher studies. Returning from Kolkata, he became a teacher at Sonaram School in Guwahati. Later on, he took the post of an S. D. C. and went to Shillong. He was later promoted to E.A. C. and retired from the post in 1927. 

He was a poet, literary figure and a devoted researcher of Assamese history. He was also the first sonnet poetry writer in the Assamese language. His poetry book is ‘Fuller Chakki’ (1970. He edited the children’s magazine ‘Akon’ and the famous ‘Jonaki’ magazine. Hemchandra Goswami edited a number of books, including: ‘Darang Raj Bangshavali (1917), Kathagita (1918), Purani Assam Buranji (1922), Kamarupa Tantra (1928), Asomiya Sahityar Chaneki (1929) etc. In 1900, he along with Colonel P. T. R. Gordon led the publication of Hemchandra Baruah’s ‘Hemkosh’ (an Assamese dictionary).

Deepjyoti Barpujari

Deepjyoti Barpujari is an educator and writer. He was born in 1984 in the village of Belshar (Deuripari) in Nalbari district. His father’s name was Kanak Sharma and his mother’s name was Sarla Devi. He received his school education at a local school. Later he went to Guwahati for higher studies and received his college education in Krishnakanta Sandikoi Government College. Chandradhar Baruah

Chandradhar Baruah (1874-1961) was an Assamese playwright, poet and lyricist. He was born in Jorhat. His father’s name was Durgadhar and his mother’s name was Premavati. He received his school education in Jorhat and college education in Calcutta. Then he studied law and practicsed it for a few years. Later on, he started a tea business. Chandradhar Baruah was closely associated with the ‘Sarbbajanik Sabha and ‘Assam Association’. In 1930, he represented Assam in the Round Table Conference. 

Chandradhar Baruai wrote several plays, such as ‘Meghnad Badh’ (1904), ‘Bhagya Pariksha’ (1915), ‘Tilottama Sambhav’ (1924), ‘Rajarshi’ (1937) etc. He also wrote a book of humorous poems entitled ’Ranjan’ (1926). He wrote a novel after the title ‘Rajarshi’ (1937) and composed some songs. He also compiled and edited a book titled ‘Ratnakosh’. In 1917, he became the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha, Gowalpara Session in 1918. He was honoured, for his contribution to Assamese literature, with the title of ‘Sahitya-Ratna’.

Dr Joyshree Goswami Mahanta

Dr Joyshree Goswami Mahanta is an eminent Assamese educationalist and popular writer. He was born in 1960. He served as a Professor in the Department of Zoology, University of Guwahati. He represented Assam as a Member of Rajya Sabha from 1999 to 2002. 

Dr Jayshree Goswami Mohanta has written many short stories, novels, poems, children’s literature and many thought-provoking essays. His, ‘Mahakab’, ‘Gandhar’i, ‘Chanakya’ are three famous research novels. Among his collections of short stories mention may be made of ‘Annya Ek Ratnakar’ and ‘Owali Yowa Chadar’. ‘Asom Andolan: Yugamiya Chintar Pratifalan’ is a collection of his essay. ‘Chemoniyar Bishwa Sahitya’, ‘Bishwar Shrestha Sadhu’ are some books by him written for children. He also edited a newspaper called ‘Adinar Sambad’.

Dr Pranayee Dutt

Dr Pranayee Dutt is an educator and researcher. Pranayee Dutt, who has been known for her talent since childhood, passed H S final examination from Tarini Choudhury Bahumukhi Higher Secondary Girls’ School, Guwahati in 1970 securing a second stand in the Science Stream. In 1973, he graduated from Cotton College with Honours in Physics and in 1975 he passed M Sc and took the job of teaching first at Pandu College and later on, at Cotton College. In 1977, he got an appointment as a lecturer of Physics at Guwahati University. In 1987, he conducted research on ‘Radiation of Cosmic Rays’ under the guidance of Professor Kishori Mohan Pathak, Guwahati University and gained Ph D degree. In 1902, he joined the Department of Electronics and Communication Technology, the University of Guwahati as the Head Professor and held the post till 2013.

Dr Pranayee Dutt’s numerous research papers have been published in various magazines at national and international levels. He has participated in several conferences in Canada, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Russia, China and other countries. 0 0 0

Talebar Rahman

Talebar Rahman (1960 —) is an Assamese ideal teacher, active social worker and humanitarian writer. He was born in a poor peasant family in Betbari village of Barepata district in Assam. His father’s name was Kajal Mia and his mother’s name was Ajiran Nesha. Amid financial hardship, he studied up to higher secondary and became a teacher in Kamalpur M. E. School in 1979. However, his interest in higher education led him to pursue an MA in Social Science. 

Talebar Rahman, who was interested in writing since his student days, has written several books to date. Some of the books written and published by him are: ‘Adarsh   Matsya Pratipalan’, ‘Aranyarodan’ (poetry collection), ‘Anubhuti’ (poetry collection), ‘Hotel Manageror Sakhatkar’ (story collection), and so on. Atul Chandra Baruah

Atul Chandra Baruah (1916- 2001) was an Assamese writer and literary critic. He was born on 29 May 1916 in the village of Maroi in Darang district. His father’s name was Bhogram Baruah and his mother’s name was Pramila Baruah. After completing his primary education at a local school, he graduated from Cotton College and took a postgraduate degree from Calcutta University. Then he began his career as a teacher and later on became an additional Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup District.

Atul Chandra Baruah made significant contributions to Assamese literature by composing and editing many books. Some of his published books are: Sashityar Ruparekha (1957), Prajapatir Nirbandha (1957), Samalochana Sahitya (1957), Bhumi Aru Jivan (1958), Sahitya Drishti (1960), Sandhiyar Sadhu (1963), Sahitya Jivan (1965), Galpa Bharati (1969), Asomiya Kabyat Premar Bunwati Sunti (1970), Manasa Kavya Aru Ojapali (1978), Asomiya Abdhidhan Aru Bhasha (1977) etc. Atul Chandra Baruah became the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1979.

Amritbhushan Dev Adhikari

Amritbhushan Dev Adhikari (1858-1944) was an Assamese writer and social activist. He was born in 1858 in Dalgaon, Goalpara. His father’s name was Kanthabhushan Dev and his mother’s name was Akashilata Devi. Although he could not complete his education due to financial constraints, he started his career as a teacher in Jorhat and retired after teaching in various places. He was a regular contributor to ‘Banhi’ and ‘Awahan’. His published book is: ‘Srimadvanamghosa’. In addition to this, he wrote ‘Bhakti Ratnavali’. He was instrumental in preserving the language, culture and heritage of Gopalpara district. He became the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1923.

Ismail Hossain

Ismail Hossain is an Assamese progressive poet, critic, patron of Hindu-Muslim solidarity, researcher of Vaishnavite literature and culture and an eloquent speaker.

Ismail Hossain was born on February 22, 1965, to a poor peasant family in the village of Bhoukamari (Kuakuchi) of   Barpeta district, Assam. His father’s name was Abdus Kaddus and his mother’s name was Golapjan Nessa. Ismail Hossain was the fifth of eleven children of his parents. Abdus Kaddus sent all his children to school, but due to poverty, the first child, Siddiqur Rahman and the fifth son, Ismail Hossain were able to get higher education at their own expense.

Ismail Hossain received his primary education at Banbahar Primary School, Kayakuchi Higher Secondary School, Bhowanipur Higher Secondary School and Kujar Pith High School respectively. He later graduated in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Assam Engineering College. He is currently working as a Lecturer in Prince of Welsh Engineering College, Jorhat.

Ismail Hossain, who was very studious since his student life, has established himself as an influential intellectualist and progressive thinker and writer of Assam and have written about eighty books till date. 

Ismail Hossain began his literary career with poetry and his first published book of poetry was ‘Jivan Aru Manuh Bishayaka’(1996). This was followed by two other poetry books ‘Bigyapan’ (2000) and ‘Naipariya’ (2000).

Apart from these books, he has written a number of research and critical books among which mention may be made of: ‘Jeevan Pathik Rahul Sanskrityayan (1994), Safdar Hashmi Aru Batar Nat (1994), Hindu-Musalman Prashna: Sanghat Aru Samanyay (1994), Asomar Jatiya Jivan Aru Avibasi Asomiya Musalman (1998), Sahityat Sampradayikta Aru Rabindranath (1998), Gu Hatya Aru Sampradayikata (1998), Sanhatir Sandhanat ((1999), Vishnu Ravar Jivan Darshan ((2000), Kitap Aru Samalochana (2001), Fat Bihur Etihas Aru Oitiyya (2002), Kabita Aru Abritti (2003), Rangali Bihur Oitiyya etc. In addition to writing these books, he has also edited many books.

Habil Uddin

Habil Uddin is an illiterate poet of Assam. He was born in 1970 in the village of Gunialguri in the greater Kalgachiya region of Barpeta District. His father’s name was Habibur Rahman and his mother’s name was Aklima Khatun. Deprived of schooling due to financial hardship, Habil Uddin enjoys composing poetry orally from an early age. He writes poetry in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi.

In 1996, he married Mofida Khatun and becomes the father of a daughter and a son. He runs a small business and with it, he has been living by hands and mouth.

He has already published five volumes of poems, namely, ‘Kar Paase Darai’ (Bengali), ‘Samadhan Kot’ (Assamese), ‘Shraddhanjali’ (Assamese), ‘Jeevan Ekta Kathgara’ (Bengali) and ‘Hatiyar Nehi Kalam Uthao’( Hindi).

Spontaneous patriotism and philanthropy, protest against social stigma, hypocrisy of political leaders, degradation of humanity etc. are the main themes of his poetry.

The illiterate poet Habil Uddin is not aware of rhyme, prosody although some of his poems echo the melody of a lyric. There are inconsistencies in language and spelling, although the fault is forgivable for his illiteracy. 

It is a rare example that the illiterate Habil Uddin has fulfilled his responsibility towards the Assamese language and nation by composing poems orally. 0 0 0

Manik Lal Bhowmik

Manik Lal Bhowmik is an Assamese-Bengali poet, novelist, translator, humanitarian, social worker and patron of literature and culture.

Manik Lal Bhowmik was born on January 4, 1959 in Hojai, Nagaon district of Assam. His father’s name was Binod Bihari Bhowmik and his mother’s name was Satyabhama Devi. 

Manik Lal Bhowmik was educated in different places of Assam and joined the teaching profession at Pathshala Navkalpa High School in 1981. After this, he joined the State Bank of India in 1985 and was transferred to various places of India. He is now working as a Deputy Manager, State Bank of India, Guwahati, Panbazar Branch. Manik Lal Bhowmik, who has been accustomed to writing since his student days, has published a number of books in Assamese and Bengali, such as: Sanghat (novel), Manavatar Nagna Mishail (Assamese Poetry Book), and Megh O Brishtir Journal (Bengali), ‘Andharat Emuthi Jonak’ (Assamese Poetry Book), ‘Manavata’ (Bangla Ekankika Natak), ‘Anubhavar Nimila Anka’ (Assamese Poetry Book), ‘Luitar Bukut Humuniyahbor’ (Assamese Poetry Book), ‘Pathe Ghate’ (Bengali Poetry Book), Anusandhan (Assamese novel) etc. 

Manik Lal Bhowmik is also an accomplished translator. Some of the books he translated from Assamese to Bengali are: ‘Samashta Darwaja Bandha Hobar Par’, (Poetry Book/ Original: Purandhar Patgiri), ‘Ami Phul Tara-Nadi’ (Poetry, Original: Girija Patgiri).

Manika Bhowmik

Manika Bhowmik is a Bengali poet, social worker and patron of literature and culture from Barpeta Road in Barpeta district of Assam.

She was born on January 2, 1968 in Koch Bihar, West Bengal. Her father’s name was Dhirendra Choudhury and her mother’s name was Usharani Choudhury.

She was married to Manik Lal Bhowmik, a poet, novelist, translator, humanitarian, social worker and patron of literature and culture at Barpeta Road, Assam.

She likes writing activities and occasionally writes poetry and articles to various magazines. Already she has published two poetry books, as ‘Prayas’ and ‘Jeevanato Ekatai’ (Bengali). Her poems depict the lost memory, romance, the noise of mechanical civilization, the depravity of humanity etc. 0 0 0

Ananda Chandra Agarwala

Ananda Chandra Agarwala was an Assamese poet and writer. He was born on 5 September 1874 in Tezpur. His father’s name was Kashiram Agarwala and mother’s name was Radhika Agarwala. After matriculation from Government High School, Tezpur, he went to Calcutta for higher studies, but returned home without pursuing further studies and took to teaching in a school for a year. Then he joined the police in 1894 and retired as a Superintendent of Police in 1930. 

In 1906, he wrote the ‘Police Manual’. In 1921, he received the title ‘Ray Bahadur’ from the Government. 

He was accustomed to writing activities from his student life and wrote ‘Jilikani’ Goalaparaara Purani Birarana’ ‘Komal Path, Adipath, Dharma Sangeet etc. He was nicknamed as ‘Bhangani Konwar’ (Prince of Translation) as he translated many poems from English to Assamese. ‘Sukhar Thai’, ‘Chaha Aru Pandit’ are two his translated poems. In 1934, he became the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Ananda Chandra Baruah

Ananda Chandra Baruah was an Assamese poet and dramatist. He was born on 31st December 1907 in the Khumtai Garden of Maran. His father’s name was Premdhar Baruah and his mother’s name was Indrani Devi. After matriculation from Jorhat Government High School in 1926, he went to Kashi Hindu University for higher studies. However, he did not complete his education and returned home. Then started working as an assistant editor of ‘Sadiniya Asom’ in 1929. In 1932, he became the Assistant Editor of ‘Batari’. He founded the ‘Chintamani Chakra’ in Jorhat in 1962 and became its president. In 1969, he became the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha. He was awarded the ‘Padma Shri’ in 1973 and the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poetry book ‘Bakulbanar Kabita’ in 1983. After this poetry book, he is popularly called ‘Bakulbanar Kabi’ (poet of Bakul Forest).

Anandaram Dhekiyal Phukan

Anandaram Dekiyal Phukan was an Assamese writer, linguist and social activist. He was born on 24 August 1819 in Guwahati. His father’s name was Holiram Dhekial Phukan and his mother’s name was Prasuti Devi. After completing his high school education in Guwahati, he went to Calcutta for higher studies, although he returned home without pursuing further studies. He started his career as an official in the court of Nalbari. In 1852 he spent some time in Nagaon as an assistant commissioner. In 1855, he wrote, under the pseudonym ‘A Native’, a pamphlet entitled ‘A Few Remarks on the Assamese Language’. The book was published by Shivsagar Mission Press. 

He was one of the ardent patrons of Assamese language. He wrote articles in the ‘Arunodai’. In 1852, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan established a printing press in Calcutta called ‘Calcutta New Press’.

Anandaram Baruah

Anandaram Baruah was a Sanskrit scholar and writer and the first graduate, the first barrister and the first ICS official of Assam. 

He was born on 13 May 1850 at Rajadwara in North Guwahati. His father’s name was Gargaram Baruah and his mother’s name was Durlaveshwari Baruah. He passed the high school examination from Guwahati in 1864 and went to Calcutta for higher education and achieved a bachelor degree. Then he went to London and studied law and passed the ICS examination. After returning home, he started his career as an Assistant Judge of Shivsagar and then served in various places of Assam. He was very studious and talented from his childhood and had a great interest in Sanskrit literature. As a magistrate, he had to lead a very busy life, yet he managed to write some valuable books as ‘A Practical English-Sanskrit Dictionary’ ‘Bhavabhuti’, ‘Mahabir Charitam’, ‘Bhavabhuti and His Place in Sanskrit’, ‘Higher Sanskrit Grammar’ etc. He died prematurely on 19th January 1889 suffering from paralysis.  0 0 0

Joy Goswami 

Joy Goswami is a Bengali poet, novelist and essayist. He was born on November 10, 1954 in Kolkata. While he was still a child, his parents shifted to Ranaghat and since then the family has been living there. His father, Madhu Goswami was a freedom fighter who died when Joy Goswami was only eight years old. After his father’s death, his mother who was a school teacher brought up him with much love and care.

Joy Goswami began to write poetry while was a high school student. He was inspired by the writings of Rabindranath Tagore, Jivananda Das and Shankha Gosh. His first published poetry collection was ‘Christmas O Shiter Sonnetguchcha’. In 1989 he won Ananda Bazar Patrika Award for his poetry collection entitled ‘Gumiyecha Jaopata’ and Sahitya Academy Award in 2000 for his collection of poetry entitled ‘Pagli Tomar Sange’. Besides these, he has won Anil Bose Puraskar, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Puraskar, Rachana Samagra Puraskar. He writes on a variety of themes but the theme of love occupies a prominent place in his writings. 

Among his poetic works mention may be made of- Christmas O Shiter Sonnetguchcha, Aleya Hrad, Unmader Pathkram, Vutum Bhagaban, Ghumiyecho Jaopata,  Aj Yadi Amake Jigyash Karo, Pagli Tomar Shange, Patar Pochak etc.

Besides being a reputed poet, Joy Goswami is an adept novelist also. He has authored several popular novels such as—Hridye Premer Shirsha, Manoramer Upanyash, Suranga O Pratiraksha etc.  In addition to these, he has published some autobiographical essays.

He writes on everyday themes adding heartfelt emotion to them with devotion and sincerity.০ ০ ০
