Roger Mais (1905-1955) was a Jamaican short story writer, journalist, poet, playwright, and novelist. He was born into a middle-class family in Kingston.  He wrote on the themes of distinction between the privileged and non-privileged classes of society.  In 1944 he wrote a satire entitled ‘Now We Know’ and was accused of sedition. It bought him imprisonment for six months.  He wrote more than one hundred short stories and published two books of collected stories as ‘And Most of all Man’ and ‘Face and Other Stories’. His well-known novels include ‘The Hills Were Joyful Together’ (1953), ‘Brother Man’ (1954) and ‘Black Lightning’ (1955). Roger Mais died of cancer in 1955 at the age of 49. 0 0 0
