Devakanth Baruah-Brief Life Sketch
Devakanta Baruah (1914-1996) was an Assamese romantic poet, politician and educationist. He was born in Dibrugarh. He received his B.A. and B. L. from Kashi University. He joined the ‘Ien Amanya Andolan’ in 1931 and was imprisoned for six months. He later entered politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha. He also served as the Governor of Bihar in 1970 and as the Union Education Minister in 1982.
Apart from being a politician, he was also a poet and journalist. His only book of poetry, ‘Sagar Dekhisha’, was published in 1948. The journey of Assamese romantic poetry, which began in the pages ‘Jonaki’, spread through the poetry of Devakant Baruah. For the first time in modern Assamese poetry, he made good use of the spoken language of daily life. Devakanta Baruah added a new dimension to modern Assamese poetry by using Robert Browning’s style of dramatic monologue in some of his poems. He is the poet of the late Romantic era and the gatekeeper of the modern era. This is why he is called the ‘Poet of Domoza’ (poet of two roads). Patriotism, the glorification of the past, selfless human love, etc. are the main themes of his poetry. 0 0 0
