Bhattadev-Brief Life Sketch
The full name of Bhattadev (1558-1638 A D), the father of Assamese prose, is Vaikuntha Ram Bhagwat Bhattacharya. He was born in Veragram, Baranagar of Assam. His father’s name was Chandrabharati. At the behest of his father, he became a disciple of Sridamodar, a Vaishnav guru. He received the titles of ‘Kabiratna’ (Pearl of Poets) and ‘Bhagavat Bhattacharya’ from the ‘Pandit Samaj’ (Scholar Society) for his profound erudition in Bhagavata Geeta and in the interpretation of Hindu scriptures. He wrote, after the suggestion of his guru, ‘The Bhagavad Purana’, ‘The Gita’ and ‘the Bhakti Ratnavali’ in prose to be easily understood by the common people. In addition to these, he composed ‘Saran Malika’, ‘Guru Bansawali’, ‘Prasangawali’ in Assamese and ‘Bhaktisar’ and ‘Bhaktibibek’ in Sanskrit. No prose book was written in any North Indian language before Bhattadev. His prose, of course, is not as same as that of Buranji (history). He was influenced by the language of his contemporary verse. There are some signs of rhythm in his prose writings. 0 0 0
