Upendra Chandra Lekharu-Brief Life Sketch
Upendra Chandra Lekharu (1905-1989) was one of the leading scholars of Assamese Vaishnavite literature. Apart from Assamese, he also did M.A. in Bengali. After completing his education, he started teaching at Kamaldev High School in North Guwahati. Later on, he taught for a long time in the Assamese department of Cotton College and retired as a departmental head. He edited the ‘Katha Guru Charita’ a great prose work in the Assamese language. His notable books include ‘Assamese Ramayana Sahitya’, ‘Rajinikanth Bardalai’, and ‘Laxminath Bezbaruah’. He also made significant contributions to the field of translation. Some translated books by him are – Sri Sri Ramkrishnar Updesh, Dharmapada, and Anaka Ardena. Upendra Chandra Lekharu also edited some old Assamese books in a modern scientific manner that includes ‘Bhakti Vivek’ and ‘Kotha Sahitya’. He presided over the 37th session of the Asom Sahitya Sabha held at Dhinga in 1970.
