Nabakanta Baruah-Brief Life Sketch

Nabakanta Barua (29 December 1926 – 14 July 2002) was a prominent Assamese poet and novelist. He is also known by his pseudonym ‘Ekhud Kokaideo’ and ‘Seema Dutta’.

Nabakanta Barua was born in 1926 in Guwahati, Assam. Nilakanta Barua, a school inspector and later teacher was his father and Swarnalata Baruani was his mother.

Nabakanta Barua started his education at a local school and completed his matriculation in 1941. After that, he got admitted to Cotton College, Guwahati. In 1943, he went to Shantiniketan (West Bengal) and took a B.A. degree from there with English honours. In 1953 he took  M. A. in English literature from Aligarh Muslim University.

After taking his M.A. he taught at A.K college, Uttar Pradesh for some months. But the same year he returned to Assam and joined Jagannath Barooah College in Jorhat and after only a few months he joined Cotton College, Guwahati and worked there until 1964. From 1964 to 1967 he worked at Assam Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad. He again joined Cotton College and retired from retired as a vice principal in 1984.

Nabakanta Baruah began practising literature at an early age and kept writing until his death. He wrote poetry, novel,  literary criticism, songs and children’s literature. Among his poetry books mention may be made of ‘Hey Arnya Hey Mahanagar’, ‘Eti Doti Egharti Tora’, ‘Ravan’, ‘Shamrat’, ‘Yoti Aru Keitaman Sketch’, and ‘Dolongt Tamighara‘. His novels include Kapilpuriya Sadhu, Kakadeotar Har, Gorma Kunwari, and Manuh Ataibor Dip. His books written for children are Akharar Jakhala,  Siyali Palegoi Ratanpur and Vot-Ukare Vu.  In addition to these, he wrote some literary criticisms and songs also.

He served as the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha and presided over Asom Sahitya Sabha’s Bishwanath Chariali convention in 1990.
