Raghunath Chaudhary-Brief Life Sketch

Raghunath Chaudhary (1879-1968) was an Assamese romantic poet. He was born in a village called Laupara near Mukalmuwar in the Nalbari district, Assam. His father’s name was Bholanath Chaudhary. One day, in his childhood, he fell down the floor from the foundation of his home and become lame which lasted forever. Due to domestic difficulties, one of his relatives took the child Raghunath to Guwahati and enrolled him in a school. He read there up to class VIII and being unable to cope up with the strict discipline of school life, he left school and began to teach at a school as a teacher but later on he took to farming and devoted himself to studying Bengali and Sanskrit literature at home. Then for some years, he became an Assistant Editor of ‘Jonaki’, a newspaper published from Guwahati. After then, he edited of ‘Maina’, ‘Jayanti’ and ‘Survi’

Raghunath Chaudhary began his literary career as a poet. His books of poetry are Sadri (1910), Keteki (1918), Karbala (1923), Dahikatara (1931), Navmallika (1958) and posthumously ‘Manai Bairagi’ and ‘Pachathiya’. He wrote poems on the themes of nature. He is also known as ‘Bihagi, (Bird) Poet’ because he wrote many beautiful poems on the theme of birds. He was elected President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha Session held at Tezpur in 1935. 0 0 0
