Nalinibala Devi-Brief Life Sketch

Nalinibala Devi (1898– 1977 was an Indian -Assamese biographer and mystical female poet. She was born in Guwahati in 1898. Her father Karmaveer Nabin Chandra Bordoloi was a notable Assamese-Indian revolutionary who fought against British rule in India. Nalinibala Devi had hardly got the chance to undergo formal education. As a social custom, she became a victim of child marriage and at the age of twelve, she was married to Jeeveshwar Changkakoti by whom Nalinibala gave birth to five kids. But her husband died when Nalinibala was solely nineteen. After her husband’s death, she lost two of her children early in life. These tragic incidents couldn’t break her down and as a way of consolation, she started reading books at home and started writing poems on the theme of love, patriotism and mysticism. Her initial book of poems ‘Shandhiyar Shur’ (Evening Melody) was published in 1928. Her other poetic works are Alakananda, Sopunar Shur, Porosh Moni, Yuga Devata, Shesh Puja, Parijator Abhishek, Prahlad, Meghdut, Suravi, Rooprekha and Seshor Shur (Last Melody). In addition to writing these poetry books, she wrote some essays and biographies that include ‘Shantipath’ (essay anthology), ‘Smriti Tirtha’ (story on her father’s life)’ Sardar Vallavbhai Patel, Biswadeepa and Eri Aha Dinbur (autobiography). She had to her credit one drama titled Meerabai. In 1950 she established ‘Sadou Asom Parijat Kanan’ which later become celebrated as ‘Moina Parijat’ (the kids’ organization of Assam). She was awarded ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for her poetry book  ‘Alakananda’ in 1968 and was honoured with ‘Padma Shri’ in 1957 by the Indian Government. She was the president of the 23rd Jorhat Session of Assam Sahitya Sabha (Assam Literary Society) in 1955. 0 0 0
