Laxminath Bezbaruah (1864-1936) was a multi-facet Assamese writer and nationalist. He was born in Ahatguri, undivided Nagaon district. He passed the entrance examination in 1886 from Shivsagar Government High School and went to Calcutta for higher studies. In 1891, he married Prajnasundari, the daughter of the famous Thakur family of Bengal.
Lakshminath Bezbaruah was the pioneer of modern literature. He authored a number of books. He began to write articles in the ‘Jonaki’a literary magazine. His comic drama ‘Litikai’ and stories were published on the pages of ‘Jonaki’. His literary talent was multifacet. He was instrumental in establishing the Assamese language and literature in all forms of writing including poetry, plays, novels, short stories, humorous essays, essays, critiques, biographies, etc. His literary works can be categorized as follows:
Humorous Drama: Litikai, Pachani, Nomal and Chikar-Pati-Nikarpati.
Novel: Padum Kunwari.
Poetry: Kadamkali.
Short Story: Jonbiri, Sadhukathar Kunki, Kehonkali and Survi.
Tale Books: Burhi Aair Sadhu, Kakadeuta Aru Natilaraa, Junuka.
Historical Drama: Jayamati, Chakradhawaj Singh, Belimar.
Satire: Kripabar Barbaruwar Kaktar Topola, Kripabar Barbaruwar Ovatani, Barbaruwar Bulni, Barbaruwar Bhabar Burburni etc.
Biography: A short Biography of the great Dinanath Barbaruah, Sankardeva, The great Sankardeva and Madhavadeva.
Autobiography: Mour Jiban Suwaran (The Reminscence of My Life).
Theoretical Books: Krishna Katha.
He was also the editor of ‘Bahi’ (a magazine). In 1924, he became the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in Guwahati session. He died in 1936. 0 0 0
