Chandradhar Baruah-Brief Life Sketch
Chandradhar Baruah (1874-1961) was an Assamese playwright, poet and lyricist. He was born in Jorhat. His father’s name was Durgadhar and his mother’s name was Premavati. He received his school education in Jorhat and college education in Calcutta. Then he studied law and practicsed it for a few years. Later on, he started a tea business. Chandradhar Baruah was closely associated with the ‘Sarbbajanik Sabha and ‘Assam Association’. In 1930, he represented Assam in the Round Table Conference.
Chandradhar Baruah wrote several plays, such as ‘Meghnad Badh’ (1904), ‘Bhagya Pariksha’ (1915), ‘Tilottama Sambhav’ (1924), ‘Rajarshi’ (1937) etc. He also wrote a book of humorous poems entitled ’Ranjan’ (1926). He wrote a novel after the title ‘Rajarshi’ (1937) and composed some songs. Chandradhar Baruah also compiled and edited a book titled ‘Ratnakosh’. In 1917, he became the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha, Gowalpara Session in 1918. He was honoured, for his contribution to Assamese literature, with the title of ‘Sahitya-Ratna’.
