Hemchandra Goswami-Brief Life Sketch
Hemchandra Goswami (1872-1928) was a poet, writer and devoted research scholar of Assam history. Hemchandra Goswami was born in the Dhekiyal village, Golaghat. His Father’s name was Dambrudhar and mother’s name was Ghankanti. After completing his High School education in Assam, he went to Calcutta for higher studies. Returning from Kolkata, he became a teacher at Sonaram School in Guwahati. Later on, he took the post of an S. D. C. and went to Shillong. He was later promoted to E.A. C. and retired from the post in 1927.Â
Hemchandra Goswami was a poet, literary figure, and devoted researcher of Assamese history. He was also the first sonnet poetry writer in the Assamese language. His poetry book is ‘Fuller Chakki’ (1970. He edited the children’s magazine ‘Akon’ and the famous ‘Jonaki’ magazine. Hemchandra Goswami edited a number of books, including: ‘Darang Raj Bangshavali (1917), Kathagita (1918), Purani Assam Buranji (1922), Kamarupa Tantra (1928), Asomiya Sahityar Chaneki (1929) etc. In 1900, he along with Colonel P. T. R. Gordon led the publication of Hemchandra Baruah’s ‘Hemkosh’ (an Assamese dictionary).
