Suryakumar Bhuiyan (1892-1964) was a scholar, researcher, writer and historian from Assam. He was born in Nagaon. In 1909, he matriculated from Shillong Government School securing the first position in the Assam Valley and won the Victoria Memorial Gold Medal. Suryakumar Bhuiyan passed I. A. from Cotton College in 1911 and graduated from Presidency College, Calcutta in 1913 with honours in English. Then he passed a Postgraduate in English literature from Calcutta University in 1918. After that, he joined the teaching profession at Bezbaruah School in Jorhat. Two years later, he got an appointment as a Professor of English at Cotton College and in 1947 he became the Principal of Cotton College. Surya Kumar Bhuiyan was the first Assamese professor and principal of Cotton College. He went to England in 1936 to pursue research and gained a doctorate degree from the University of London. In 1952, he received an honorary D. Litt degree from the same university. In the same year, he was elected the President of the Modern History Branch of the Indian History Congress held at Guwalior. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1952 and was awarded the ‘Padma Shri’ in 1956. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Guwahati University from 1956 to 1970. He was also the President of the Shillong Session (1953) of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.

Surya Kumar Bhuiyan, who had been known for his talents since his student days, first made his debut as a poet, though later on, he became well-known as a historian. He contributed a lot to the development of the Assamese language and literature by writing many valuable books. His only book of poetry is ‘Nirmali’. He also wrote some short stories. His only collection of short stories is entitled ‘Panchami’. ‘Tripadi’ and Suryakumar Bhuiyanar Bibid Prabandha’ are his two essay books. He also wrote biographical books. His biographical books are: Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Anandaram Baruah, Assam Jiyari, Jonaki and Chaneki. He authored a number of historical and informative books, including: ‘Kunwar Bidruh, Burunjir Bani, Ramani Gavaru, Mirjumalar Asom Akraman’ and ‘Lachit Barphukan’.

In addition to writing books in Assamese, he authored several notable books in English, such as An Assamese Nur Jahan, Early British Relations with Assam, Lachit Borphukan and His Times, Atan Borgohain and His Times, Men I Have Met and London Memories. In addition to those books, Suryakumar Bhuyan edited several historical books.
