Sayed Abdul Malik (1919-2000) was a prominent Assamese novelist and story-teller. He was born in Naharan, Golaghat district. After Matriculation from Jorhat Government High School, he passed B A from Cotton College, Guwahati. Then he took to work in the Department of Excise and then at the Radio Centre, Guwahati. After this, he passed M.A. in Assamese from Guwahati University and started teaching at Jagannath College, Jorhat. He retired from the same post and served the nation as a Member of Rajya Sabha.
From the time he was in school, he started writing activities and wrote a number of novels and short stories. Some of his books are Parasamani, Adharasila, Aghari Atmar Kahini, Maraha Ful, Suruymukhir Sapna, Rupatirthar Yatri, Dhanya Naratanu Val, Sbaksara, Chabighara, Ranagaraa, Rajanigandha, Chakulo etc. Sayed Abdul Malik’s novel ‘Aghari Atmar Kahini’ won him the Sahitya Akademi Award. Through his writings, the image of a declining society, the compassion of love and the tone of humanity are revealed vividly. His language is characterized by simplicity and homely words and phrases. Sayed Abdul Malik presided over the Abhayapuri session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.Â
