Ratnakanta Barkakati-Brief Life Sketch
Ratnakanta Barkakati (1897-1963) was an Assamese poet, critic and essayist. In the literary circle of Assam, he is known as ‘Sewalir Kabi’(Poet of Night Jasmine) after his first poetry book ‘Sewali’. He was born in Dhing, Nagaon. He passed the entrance examination from a local school and went to Calcutta for higher studies, although he dropped out of school and joined the Indian Independence Movement.Â
Ratnakanta Barkakati began to practise writing from his student life and wrote poetry on the pages of such magazines as Usha, Banhi, Chetana etc. He published his first poetry book entitled ‘Sewali’ in 1932. Later on, he wrote two other poetry books entitled ‘Tarpan’ and ‘Chandrahar’. He also composed an emotional drama titled ‘Alaka’. Beauty in nature and love are the two main themes of his poems.
