Rajanikanta Bardoloi-Brief Life Sketch

Rajanikanta Bardoloi (1867-1940) is known in Assamese literature as the ‘Emperor of Novel’ and the ‘Scott of Assam’. He was born in Kukurmuta (Hedayetpur) in Guwahati. Being economically weak, he spent his childhood at his maternal uncle’s home and staying there, he passed the entrance examination from the Government High School, Guwahati. In 1887 he passed F A and B A from Metropolitan College, Calcutta. After completing his education, he joined Laxmipur as a land magistrate and retired as a district magistrate in 1918.

Since his childhood, Rajanikanta Bardoloi bore an interest in writing and after completing his education, he took to writing novels despite his busy life. The novels he wrote are: ‘Rahdoi Ligiri, Miri Jiyari, Manomati, Danduwadroha, Nirmala Bhakata, Tamraeswari Mandir and Radha-Rukminir Ran’.All his novels, except ‘Miri Jiyari’. are historical novels. Rajanikanta Bardoloi, through his novels, portrayed the past of Assam vividly with some historical truth. By writing these novels he gave perfection to the tradition of Assamese novel and hence he is acclaimed as the ‘Emperor of Assamese Novels’. Rajanikanta Bardoloi wrote some humorous articles under the pseudonym ‘Bhulai Sarma’ in the magazines Banhi’ and ‘Alochani’. Rajinikanth became the chairman of the eighth session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. 0 0 0
