Marjorie Pickthall | Brief Biography

Marjorie Pickthall was a Canadian poet and author born on May 17, 1883, in London, England. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1888 and grew up in Toronto. Pickthall studied at the University of Toronto and later in England at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford.

Her first book of poetry, “The Gate of the Sea,” was published in 1910 and was well-received. Throughout her career, Pickthall continued to publish poetry and was known for her lyrical style and her ability to capture the beauty of the Canadian landscape.

Pickthall was also a prolific writer of fiction, including short stories and novels. Her most famous novel, “David Durrant,” was published in 1916 and was based on her experiences growing up in Toronto.

Pickthall was active in the women’s suffrage movement and was a strong advocate for women’s rights. She was a member of the National Council of Women and the Women’s Canadian Club.

In addition to her writing, Marjorie Pickthall was an avid traveler and visited many countries, including Japan, China, and Europe. She was particularly drawn to the beauty of the East and was influenced by Eastern philosophy and spirituality in her writing.

Marjorie Pickthall died on June 26, 1922, in London, England, at the age of 39. Despite her short life, she left a lasting legacy as a talented poet and writer. Her work continues to be admired and studied, and she is remembered as one of Canada’s greatest poets. 0 0 0.
