Robert W Service | Brief Biography

Robert Service was a Scottish-Canadian poet and writer who was born on January 16, 1874, in Preston, Lancashire, England. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 21 and worked as a bank clerk in several Canadian cities. In 1908, Service moved to Dawson City, Yukon, during the Klondike Gold Rush and began writing poems inspired by the rugged frontier life.

Service’s poems were known for their humor and their vivid descriptions of the wilderness, the gold rush, and the people he encountered in the north. His most famous works include “The Shooting of Dan McGrew” and “The Cremation of Sam McGee.” These two poems, along with others, were published in his first book of verse, “Songs of a Sourdough” in 1907.

Robert Service’s poetry was very popular and his books were best-sellers, both in Canada and in the United States. He continued to write and publish poetry for many years, and his work was widely read and appreciated by people all over the world.

In addition to his poetry, Robert Service also wrote several novels, including “The Trail of ’98” and “The Pretender.” He was a prolific writer, and his works have been translated into many languages.

Robert Service lived in France for many years and died in Lancieux, Brittany, on September 11, 1958. He is remembered as one of Canada’s most popular poets and as a master of the narrative ballad.
