Homen Babargohain-Brief Life Sketch
Homen Bargohain (1932-2021) was a leading poet, storyteller, novelist, journalist and intellectualist of Assam. He was born in Dhaka. He graduated from Cotton College, Guwahati and took to teaching in a school for some years. Later, he became an A C S official and worked in this post until 1968. But eventually, he devoted himself to journalism and writing.
Homen Bargohain wrote a considerable number of books. Some of his notable novels are: ‘Subala, Tantraik’, ‘Kusilaba’, ‘Haladhiya Charaiye Bao Dhan Khay’, ‘Pita Putra’, ‘Timir Tirtha’, and ‘Saodar Puteke Nao Meli Yay’. His only collection of poems is ‘Haimanti’. ‘Mour Sanbadik Jiban’ and ‘Anusandhan’ are his two autobiographies. He has also edited a number of books. Some books published under his editorship are- ‘Asomiya Sahitya’, ‘Asomiya Sahityar Burunji’, and ‘Gadyar Sadhana’.
Homen Bargohain has received several awards in recognition of his literary achievements. In 1968, he was awarded the ‘Assam Prakashan Parishad Award’ for his novel ‘Pita Putra’ (Father and Son), in 1978, the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ and in 1992, the ‘Assam Valley Literary Award’. In 2001, he was elected as the president of Assam Sahitya Sabha.
