Ananda Chandra Agarwala was an Assamese poet and writer. He was born on 5 September 1874 in Tezpur. His father’s name was Kashiram Agarwala and his mother’s name was Radhika Agarwala. After matriculation from Government High School, Tezpur, he went to Calcutta for higher studies but returned home without pursuing further studies and took to teaching in a school for a year. Then he joined the police in 1894 and retired as a Superintendent of Police in 1930.
In 1906, he wrote the ‘Police Manual’. In 1921, he received the title ‘Ray Bahadur’ from the Government.Â
Ananda Chandra Agarwala was accustomed to writing activities from his student life and wrote ‘Jilikani’ Goalaparaara Purani Birarana’ ‘Komal Path, Adipath, Dharma Sangeet etc. He was nicknamed as ‘Bhangani Konwar’ (Prince of Translation) as he translated many poems from English to Assamese. ‘Sukhar Thai’, ‘Chaha Aru Pandit’ are two of his translated poems. In 1934, he became the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.
