Anandaram Dhekiyal Phukan-Brief Life Sketch
Anandaram Dekiyal Phukan was an Assamese writer, linguist and social activist. He was born on 24 August 1819 in Guwahati. His father’s name was Holiram Dhekial Phukan and his mother’s name was Prasuti Devi. After completing his high school education in Guwahati, he went to Calcutta for higher studies, although he returned home without pursuing further studies. He started his career as an official in the court of Nalbari. In 1852 he spent some time in Nagaon as an assistant commissioner. In 1855, he wrote, under the pseudonym ‘A Native’, a pamphlet entitled ‘A Few Remarks on the Assamese Language’. The book was published by Shivsagar Mission Press.Â
Anandaram Dekiyal Phukan was one of the ardent patrons of the Assamese language. He wrote articles in the ‘Arunodai’. In 1852, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan established a printing press in Calcutta called the ‘Calcutta New Press’.
