Virginia Woolf-Brief Life Sketch
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English novelist of the stream-of-consciousness genre. She was born in South Kensington, London. Her father’s name was Leslie Stephen and her mother’s name was Julia Prinsep Jackson. Her father was a distinguished literary man. She grew up in a large but talented family. Virginia Woolf had got a favourable environment for her literary pursuit as her father had a library with a huge collection of books. Besides this, many eminent men of letters frequented their houses and she derived inspiration to get down to the field of literature. Her childhood was spent happily with her parents. Later on, she settled with one of her sisters and two brothers in Bloomsbury, which became a meeting ground for several artistic and literary people. One of them was Leonard Woolf, whom Virginia married, and with whom she founded a printing venture called Hogarth Press.
Her husband Leonard had a very sympathetic heart for her and inspired her to go on writing. She drew inspiration for her literary venture from her previous female writers. Her novels fall in the genre of the stream of consciousness novel. Through her writings, she explored the significance of identity, changes and human personality and unfolds the inner doings of the human brain. Virginia as a novelist is concerned about the position of women, especially professional women in society and the constraints they suffered. Some of her novels are ‘The Voyage Out’ (1915), ‘Night and Day’ (1919), ‘Jacob’s Room’ (1922), ‘Mrs Dalloway’ (1925), ‘To the Lighthouse’ (1927), ‘The Waves’ (1931) and some others. She wrote several essays among which ‘A Room of One’s Own’ (1929) and ‘Three Guineas’ (1938) are worth mentioning. She had two collections of short stories also.
She died in 1941, in Sussex at the age of 59. 0 0 0
