In 2010, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger started working on a location-based social network called Burbn. The app allowed users to check-in at various locations, earn points, and post pictures. However, Burbn was too complicated and cluttered, which led to a lack of interest among users.

Systrom and Krieger decided to simplify Burbn and focus on the photo-sharing aspect of the app. They rebranded the app as Instagram, a name that combined “instant camera” and “telegram.”

Instagram was launched in October 2010, initially only available on iOS. Within the first 24 hours, the app had 25,000 users.

Instagram gained its first 1 million users within the first three months of its launch. By June 2011, Instagram had 5 million users.

In April 2012, Facebook announced that it would acquire Instagram for $1 billion. The deal was finalized in September 2012, making Instagram a subsidiary of Facebook.

In 2013, Instagram introduced video sharing, allowing users to upload short videos of up to 15 seconds. This feature proved to be popular, with 5 million videos being uploaded in the first 24 hours.

In 2016, Instagram introduced Stories, a feature that allows users to share photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. The feature was inspired by Snapchat’s Stories, which had gained significant popularity at the time.

Instagram introduced IGTV in 2018, a long-form video platform that allows users to upload videos of up to 60 minutes. IGTV was aimed at competing with YouTube, which is known for long-form video content.

In 2019, Instagram began hiding the number of likes on posts in several countries, including Australia, Canada, and Japan. The move was aimed at reducing the pressure on users to generate engagement and to focus more on the quality of the content.

In 2020, Instagram launched Reels, a feature that allows users to create short-form videos of up to 30 seconds. Reels was seen as a direct response to the rise of TikTok, which had become increasingly popular among younger audiences. 0 0 0.
