Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (15 September 1876 – 16 January 1938) was a Bengali novelist and short story writer from India. He was born in Devanandpur, Hooghly, West Bengal, and grew up in poverty, but went on to become one of the most famous and influential Bengali writers of the 20th century.
Sarat Chandra wrote over a hundred novels and short stories, many of which have been adapted into films, plays, and television series. His works explore social and political issues faced by rural and urban Bengal, as well as Indian society as a whole. He is best known for his novels Devdas, Parineeta, Srikanta, and Palli Samaj.
Devdas, one of his most famous works, is a tragedy about a man who is torn between his love for two women, and his inability to come to terms with the restrictions placed on him by society. The novel was first published in 1917 and has since been adapted into several films, including the 2002 Bollywood film Devdas, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit.
Another one of his well-known works, Parineeta, is a romance set in Calcutta, India, and explores the theme of love between two people from different social classes. The novel was first published in 1914 and has since been adapted into several films, including a 2005 Bollywood film.
