Rajiv Gandhi | Brief Biography

Rajiv Gandhi (1944-1991) was the 7th Prime Minister of India, serving from 1984 to 1989. He was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on August 20, 1944, the eldest son of Indira Gandhi and Firoz Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi studied engineering in the UK, obtaining a degree from Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduation, he worked as a professional pilot for Indian Airlines. He was not involved in politics until the death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi in 1980, after which his mother Indira Gandhi requested him to enter politics.

Rajiv Gandhi was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1981 and became the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party. After his mother’s assassination in 1984, he became the Prime Minister of India at the age of 40, making him the youngest person to ever hold the office.

As Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi implemented several reforms, including those in the field of technology and telecommunications, which aimed at modernizing India. He also initiated steps to resolve the Sikh conflict in Punjab and signed the historic Rajiv-Longowal Accord with Sant Harchand Singh Longowal in 1985.

However, Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister was marred by allegations of corruption, particularly in the Bofors scandal. He lost the 1989 general elections but remained an important figure in the Indian National Congress.

In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Sri Lankan separatist group LTTE, during a rally in Tamil Nadu. His death was a great loss to India and the world. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1991.

Rajiv Gandhi is remembered for his efforts to modernize India and bring the country into the 21st century. Despite the controversies that surrounded his tenure, he is widely regarded as a charismatic leader who had the potential to bring about positive change. 0 0 0.
