Padmanath Gohain Baruah-Brief Life Sketch
Padmanath Gohain Baruah (1871-1946) was an Assamese playwright, essayist and novelist. He was born in Nakari village in the Lakhimpur district. After completing his primary education at Shivsagar and Kahima, he went to Calcutta for higher studies. But due to various difficulties, he could not complete his education and returned home. While he was in Calcutta, Gohain Baruah started editing a magazine called ‘Bijuli’. His novels ‘Vanumati’ and ‘Lahari’ were published part by part in this magazine.
Returning from Calcutta, he first concentrated on literary activities at home. He, later on, joined Kahima Government English School as a Headmaster. After that, he was appointed as the Headmaster of Normal School in Tezpur, then as a Tehsildar of Mangaldoi and then became an Honorary Magistrate.
Padmanath Gohain Baruah, a man of high literary genius, wrote a number of books and enriched the godown of Assamese literature. Some of the books he wrote are:
Drama: Gaonbura, Teton Tamuli, Jayamati, Gadadhar, Sadhani and Lachit Barphukan .
Theoretical Books: Lord Krishna.
Autobiography: Mur Suwarani.
Novel: Bhanumati and Laharai.
In addition to ‘Bijuli’, he edited ‘Assam Banti’ and ‘Usha’. Padmanath Gohain Baruah was the first president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha established in 1917. He presided over the first session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha held at Shivsagar.
