Durgeshwar Sarma-Brief Life Sketch
Durgeshwar Sarma (1884-1961) was an Assamese poet and playwright. He was born in Patiya village of Jorhat. His father’s name was Kamaleshwar Sharma. He completed his schooling in Jorhat and obtained his B. A. from Kochbihar College. After a long career as a senior government official in various departments, he retired in 1903 as a member of the Excise Commission.Â
Durgeshwar Sarma wrote two poetry books under the titles of ‘Anjali’ and ‘Nibedan’. As a playwright, he wrote some plays from his own and translated some plays from other languages. Among his plays mention may be made of ‘Partha Parajay’ (1909), ‘Chandravali’ (1910), ‘Padmavati’(1922) and ‘Balibadh’ (1922). Durgeshwar Sarma is known as a ‘philosophic poet’ in the Assamese language for the predominance of philosophical themes in his poetry. 0 0 0
