Daniel Kahneman | Brief Biography

Daniel Kahneman is a psychologist and writer who was born on March 5, 1934, in Tel Aviv, British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel). He is best known for his work in the field of behavioral economics, for which he received the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Kahneman received his undergraduate education in psychology and mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. After completing his military service, he continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a PhD in psychology in 1961.

In the late 1960s, Kahneman began collaborating with the late Amos Tversky on a series of studies that challenged the conventional wisdom of economics by demonstrating how people’s decisions are often influenced by biases and emotions. Their work eventually led to the development of the field of behavioral economics, which combines insights from psychology and economics to understand how people actually make decisions.

In 1979, Kahneman and Tversky published a paper that introduced the concept of “prospect theory,” which describes how people value potential gains and losses differently from actual gains and losses. This work has had a profound impact on the field of economics and has been widely cited in both academic and popular literature.

Throughout his career, Kahneman has continued to contribute to the fields of psychology and economics through his research and writing. He has written several influential articles and books, including “Thinking, Fast and Slow” (2011), which summarizes many of his key ideas and insights. In this book, he introduces the distinction between two modes of thinking: System 1, which is fast, intuitive, and emotional, and System 2, which is slow, deliberate, and logical.

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Kahneman has received numerous other awards and honors for his contributions to the field of behavioral economics, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world.

Today, Daniel Kahneman continues to work as a professor of psychology and public affairs emeritus at Princeton University, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. He remains active in research and continues to contribute to the field of behavioral economics through his writing and speaking engagements. 0 0 0.
