Anandaram Baruah was a Sanskrit scholar and writer and the first graduate, the first barrister and the first ICS official of Assam. 

Anandaram Baruah was born on 13 May 1850 at Rajadwara in North Guwahati. His father’s name was Gargaram Baruah and his mother’s name was Durlaveshwari Baruah. He passed the high school examination from Guwahati in 1864 and went to Calcutta for higher education and achieved a bachelor’s degree. Then he went to London and studied law and passed the ICS examination. After returning home, he started his career as an Assistant Judge of Shivsagar and then served in various places of Assam. He was very studious and talented from his childhood and had a great interest in Sanskrit literature. As a magistrate, he had to lead a very busy life, yet he managed to write some valuable books as ‘A Practical English-Sanskrit Dictionary’ ‘Bhavabhuti’, ‘Mahabir Charitam’, ‘Bhavabhuti and His Place in Sanskrit’, ‘Higher Sanskrit Grammar’ etc. Anandaram Baruah died prematurely on 19th January 1889 suffering from paralysis.  0 0 0
