Shilvadra-Brief Life Sketch

Shilvadra (1924-2008) was a well-known Assamese story-teller. His real name was ‘Revati Mohan Dutta Choudhury’. ‘Shilbhadra’ was his pseudonym. He was born in Gauripur, Dhubri district, Assam. After passing the entrance examination, Shilbhadra studied science at Cotton College. He later graduated from Carmichael College, Bangladesh with a degree in Mathematics. In 1946, he passed the post-graduate examination from the University of Calcutta in Mathematics. He joined Cotton College in 1947 as Professor of Mathematics. After two years of teaching there, he worked for a while as a contractor, journalist and assistant manager of a tea garden. Then he joined the Assam Engineering College as a Professor in 1958 and retired from the same post in 1982.

Shilvadra-Brief Life Sketch

Shilvadra began his literary career by writing a novel. His first collection of novels, ‘Madhupur’ and ‘Tarangini’, was published in 1971. In 1975, his first collection of short stories titled ‘Bastav’ was published. Since then, he published more than a dozen collections of short stories. Some of them are: Samudrar Tir, Kuno Khed Nai, Uttaran, Akou Madhupur, Madhupur Bahu Dur, Tarpan, Chithi Aru Anyannya Galpa, Apon Manuh, Jibanar Rang, Dayitya Aru Anyannya Galpa etc. Shilbhadra translated some books from English into Assamese under the titles Ripvan Winkle Aru Keitaman Galpa’ and ‘Rupantar’.

In recognition of his literary work, Shilbhadra was honoured with several awards. In 1990, he won the Assam Sahitya Parishad Award for his novel ‘Anusandhan’ and in 1992, he received the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award’ for his collection of short stories entitled ‘Dayitba Aru Anyannya Galpa’. In 1994, Shilbhadra won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection of short stories ‘Madhupur Bahudur’. In 2002, he was honoured with the ‘Assam Valley Literary Award’ for his lifelong contributions to the field of literature. 0 0 0
