Rohinton Mistry is a Canadian writer of Indian origin. He was born in 1952 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and grew up in a Parsi community. He immigrated to Canada in 1975 and currently resides in Brampton, Ontario.

Mistry is a critically acclaimed and award-winning writer known for his works of fiction that offer a nuanced and insightful portrayal of the Parsi community and Indian society. His first novel, “Such a Long Journey” (1991), was a finalist for the Booker Prize and won several awards, including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book.

In 1995, Rohinton Mistry published his second novel, “A Fine Balance”, which is considered one of his most significant works. It is set in India during the state of emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 and tells the story of four characters who come together and form an unlikely family as they struggle to survive against the backdrop of political turmoil and social upheaval. The novel was widely praised for its vivid, empathetic, and nuanced portrayal of ordinary people caught in the crossfire of history and received several awards, including the Giller Prize and the Booker Prize shortlist.

Mistry’s other works include the short story collection “Tales from Firozsha Baag” (1987) and the novel “Family Matters” (2002).
