C V Raman | Brief Biography
C V Raman (Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman) was an Indian physicist and Nobel Prize winner who was born on November 7, 1888, in Thiruvanaikaval, India. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Presidency College in Madras, India, in 1904 and later received his Master’s degree in Physics from the same institution in 1907.
In 1917, C V Raman became the first Indian to be appointed as the Palit Professor of Physics at the University of Calcutta. It was during this time that he made his most famous discovery, known as the “Raman Effect.” In 1928, Raman and his team observed that when light is scattered by a transparent material, some of the light’s photons are re-emitted at different frequencies, which results in a change of color. This effect is now known as Raman scattering and is widely used in the field of molecular biology and chemistry.
C V Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his discovery, which was a major contribution to the field of science. He continued to conduct research and published several papers on the subject of Raman scattering, as well as on the study of sound and light.
In 1948, C V Raman founded the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, India, where he continued his research until his death on November 21, 1970. He was awarded several prestigious awards during his lifetime, including the Knight Bachelor from the British government in 1929, and the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1954.
Raman’s legacy continues to inspire scientists and researchers, and his discoveries have had a profound impact on the field of physics. He is remembered as one of India’s greatest scientists and a pioneering figure in the study of light scattering. 0 0 0.
