Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847 – October 18, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world. He is often referred to as the “father of the electric age” and was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production to the process of invention.
Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, and grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the last of seven children of Samuel Edison Jr. and Nancy Elliott Edison. He was largely self-educated and had a natural curiosity about how things worked. This curiosity led him to his first invention, an electric vote recorder, which he invented in 1868.
Over the next three decades, Thomas Alva Edison developed a series of successful inventions, including the phonograph (1877), the incandescent light bulb (1879), and the motion picture camera (1893). He also made significant improvements to the telegraph and telephone systems.
Thomas Alva Edison opened the first investor-owned electric utility in 1882, the Pearl Street Station in New York City, which provided electric lighting to businesses and homes in the area. He continued to develop new inventions throughout his life and was awarded over 1,000 patents for his work.
In addition to his work as an inventor, Edison was also a successful businessman. He founded the Edison Electric Light Company in 1878 and later merged it with other companies to form General Electric.
Despite his many successes, Thomas Alva Edison also faced numerous challenges and failures throughout his life. He suffered from hearing loss, which worsened over time and eventually left him almost completely deaf. He was also known for his controversial views on race and imperialism.
Throughout his life, Edison remained humble and dedicated to his work. He famously said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” He died on October 18, 1931, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence the world today.
