Lal Bahadur Shastri | Brief Biography

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the 2nd Prime Minister of India, serving from 1964 to 1966. He was born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), India. Shastri started his political career as a freedom fighter and was imprisoned several times during the Indian independence movement. He became involved in the Congress Party and held several important positions including Minister of Police and Transport in the Uttar Pradesh government, and later as Home Minister in the Central Government.

Lal Bahadur Shastri became Prime Minister after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. During his tenure, he faced many challenges such as the India-Pakistan war of 1965 and food shortages, but he is remembered for his leadership in these trying times. He initiated the “Green Revolution” which aimed at increasing food production and promoting agriculture in India. He also introduced several progressive measures such as the abolition of the titles and privileges of the Indian aristocracy, and the implementation of a compulsory family planning program.

Shastri died suddenly on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he had gone to attend a peace conference with Pakistani President Ayub Khan. The exact cause of his death is still a matter of speculation.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was a charismatic leader and was known for his simplicity and honesty. He was a strong advocate of non-violence and advocated for peace and harmony between nations. He is remembered as one of India’s greatest leaders and his slogan of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer) still resonates with the people of India. 0 0 0.
