Charles G D Roberts was a Canadian poet and prose writer born in Douglas, New Brunswick on January 10, 1860. He is considered to be one of the “Confederation Poets,” a group of writers who helped to establish a national literary identity for Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Roberts was educated at the University of New Brunswick and later at Oxford University in England. He worked as a journalist and teacher, and he also published several collections of poems, including “Orion and Other Poems” (1880) and “The Book of the Native” (1896).
Roberts’s poetry was influenced by his love of nature and the Canadian wilderness, and many of his poems describe the beauty and majesty of the country’s landscapes and wildlife. He was also interested in the history and folklore of the indigenous peoples of Canada, and his work often incorporates elements of Native American mythology and legends.
In addition to his poetry, Charles G D Roberts wrote several novels and works of nonfiction, including “The Kindred of the Wild” (1902), which is a collection of stories about animals, and “The Watch on the Plains” (1906), which is a historical novel set in the Canadian West.
