Personification | Personification Meaning, Definition, Examples & Illustration
Personification is a figure of speech in which inanimate objects and abstract ideas are spoken of as if they are human beings. Example:
The thirsty ‘earth’ soaks up the rain
And drinks and gapes up to drink again.
Here, the poet personifies the earth and speaks of it as thirsty as a man.

- ‘Venice’, the eldest child of liberty.
- ‘Ancient oaks’ are groaning with rheumatism.
- ‘The river’ glideth at his own sweet will.
- ‘No grandeur’ hear, with a disdainful smile
The short and simple annals of the poor.

And say to all the world, ‘This was a man!’ –Shakespeare.
- ‘Opportunity’ knocks at the door but once.

- ‘Death’ lays his icy hand on the king.
- I like ‘onions’, but they don’t like me.

- This ‘advertisement’ speaks to me.
- ‘The wind’ is whispering outside us.
- ‘The sun’ kissed my cheeks when I went outside.
