Personification is a figure of speech in which inanimate objects and abstract ideas are spoken of as if they are human beings. Example:

The thirsty ‘earth’ soaks up the rain

And drinks and gapes up to drink again.

Here, the poet personifies the earth and speaks of it as thirsty as a man.

More examples:

  1. ‘Venice’, the eldest child of liberty.
  2. ‘Ancient oaks’ are groaning with rheumatism.
  3. ‘The river’ glideth at his own sweet will.
  4. ‘No grandeur’ hear, with a disdainful smile

The short and simple annals of the poor.

And say to all the world, ‘This was a man!’ –Shakespeare.

  1. ‘Opportunity’ knocks at the door but once.
  2. ‘The mountains and the hills’ broke forth into singing.
  3. Fear at my heart as at a cup

‘My life blood’ seemed to sip. –Coleridge.

  1. ‘Death’ lays his icy hand on the king.
  2. I like ‘onions’, but they don’t like me.
  3. The ‘school bell’ called us from outside.
  4. This ‘advertisement’ speaks to me.
  5. ‘The wind’ is whispering outside us.
  6. ‘The sun’ kissed my cheeks when I went outside.
  7. The smiling brook glides down and sings untold songs to our hearts. 0 0 0.
