Cao Xueqin (also known as Ts’ao Hsueh-Ch’in) was a Chinese author of the Qing dynasty. He is best known for his novel “Dream of the Red Chamber,” also known as “The Story of the Stone.” This work is considered one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Chinese fiction.

Cao Xueqin was born in 1715 in Beijing, China. Little is known about his early life, and much of what is known about him comes from his own writings and from anecdotal evidence. It is believed that he came from a wealthy and influential family, but that his family’s fortunes declined when he was young.

Cao Xueqin is most famous for his novel “Dream of the Red Chamber.” This novel tells the story of the Jia family, a wealthy and powerful family in Beijing, and follows the lives of their sons and daughters as they navigate love, politics, and the complexities of family life.
