Syed Waliullah | Brief Biography

Syed Waliullah was a Bengali author, playwright, and translator. He was born on March 2, 1922, in Daulatpur, Comilla, East Bengal (present-day Bangladesh). He is widely regarded as one of the most prominent writers in Bengali literature and is known for his works in fiction, drama, and translation.

Waliullah received his early education in Comilla and later graduated from the University of Dhaka with a degree in English literature. After graduation, he worked as a teacher and a journalist before starting his career as a writer. He made his literary debut in 1943 with the publication of his first novel, “Lalmohan Smriti” (The Memory of Lalmohan), which was well-received by the literary community.

Throughout his career, Waliullah continued to write novels, short stories, and plays. Some of his notable works include “Lalmohan Smriti,” “Chander Amabashya” (Moonless Night), “Nabanna” (New Harvest), “Tong-seng Hara” (Death of the Peasant), and “Banglar Mukh” (The Face of Bengal). He was also known for his translation work, having translated works by Shakespeare, Molière, and Chekhov into Bengali.

Waliullah’s writing style was unique, blending the traditional and the modern, and his works often dealt with social, political, and economic issues. He was known for his portrayal of the lives of the common people and his criticism of the political and social realities of Bengal. He was also an advocate for secularism and human rights, and his works often reflected his political views.

In recognition of his contributions to Bengali literature, Waliullah was awarded numerous awards and honors, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1970, the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1973, and the Ekushey Padak in 1984.

Syed Waliullah passed away on March 20, 1971, at the age of 49. His legacy continues to inspire and influence the literary world, and his works continue to be widely read and celebrated in Bangladesh and beyond. 0 0 0.
