Sisir Kumar Mitra | Brief Biography

Sisir Kumar Mitra was a renowned Bengali scientist born on February 14, 1890, in the town of Kolar in the state of West Bengal, India. He was an electrical engineer and a pioneer in the field of radio physics in India. Throughout his life, Mitra made significant contributions to the field of physics and electrical engineering.

Mitra received his early education in Kolar and then went on to study at the University of Calcutta, where he earned his B.Sc. degree in 1910 and his M.Sc. degree in Physics in 1912. In 1914, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of London, where he earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.

After completing his Ph.D., Mitra returned to India and joined the Department of Physics at the University of Calcutta as a professor. He quickly established himself as a leading expert in the field of radio physics and made numerous groundbreaking contributions to the field. In 1923, he was appointed as the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Calcutta, a position he held until his retirement in 1950.

During his career, Mitra conducted extensive research on radio wave propagation and developed innovative techniques for the study of the ionosphere and its behavior. He was also one of the first scientists in India to work on the measurement of atmospheric electricity and the effects of solar flares on the ionosphere.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of electrical engineering and radio physics, Mitra was awarded numerous awards and honors. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1956 and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in 1962.

Sisir Kumar Mitra passed away on January 13, 1963, at the age of 72. He left behind a legacy of innovation and scientific discovery that continues to inspire scientists and engineers today. 0 0 0.
