Norman Kingsley Mailer was an American novelist, journalist, and playwright. He was born on January 31, 1923, in Long Branch, New Jersey, and died on November 10, 2007, in Manhattan, New York City. He was one of the most influential writers of the second half of the 20th century and is considered one of America’s greatest novelists.

Mailer was the son of Fanny Schneider, a nurse, and Isaac Barnett Mailer, a department store owner. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York and was educated at Boys’ High School. He then attended Harvard University, where he studied aeronautical engineering before switching to a major in English. After serving in the Philippines and Japan during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army, Mailer returned to Harvard and received his degree in journalism in 1948.

Mailer’s first book, “The Naked and the Dead,” was published in 1948. The novel was based on his experiences in the war and was an instant success, making him one of the most famous writers of his generation.
