Meghnad Saha was a Bengali scientist who made significant contributions to the field of astrophysics. Born on October 6, 1893, in a small village called Shaoratoli in Bangladesh, Saha showed an early aptitude for mathematics and science. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Calcutta in 1913 and later went on to earn a Master’s degree in 1915.

Saha’s early work focused on the thermodynamics of ionized gases, and he is best known for developing the “Saha equation,” which relates the ionization state of a gas to its temperature and pressure. This equation is now widely used in the study of astronomical spectra and is considered a cornerstone of astrophysics.

In the 1920s, Saha was appointed as a professor of physics at the University of Calcutta, where he established the Institute of Nuclear Physics. He continued to work on the thermodynamics of ionized gases, and his research in this field earned him recognition as one of the leading scientists of his time.

Saha was also a strong advocate for the promotion of science and technology in India, and he worked tirelessly to establish a strong scientific community in the country. He was a founder of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, and he also played a key role in the establishment of the Indian National Science Academy.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Saha was also a social and political activist. He was a strong advocate for the independence of India, and he played an active role in the Indian National Congress. He also supported the causes of education, women’s rights, and the rights of workers and farmers.
