Kalidas Nag | Brief Biography

Kalidas Nag was a Bengali author and playwright, born on February 13, 1898, in Kolkata, India. He was one of the leading voices in Bengali literature and is widely regarded as one of the most prominent authors of his time. Nag was an accomplished writer, whose works spanned various genres including novels, short stories, plays, and poems. He was known for his insightful and thought-provoking writing style, which explored the complexities of human relationships, society, and politics.

Nag was born into a Bengali family and received his early education in Kolkata. He was interested in literature from a young age and was influenced by the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, and other prominent Bengali authors. Nag went on to receive a degree in English literature from the University of Calcutta.

After completing his education, Nag worked as a teacher and journalist before dedicating himself fully to writing. He wrote his first novel, “Ami Thakbo” (I Shall Go) in 1929, which was well-received by readers and established him as a promising new writer in Bengali literature. Over the next few years, Nag continued to write and publish more novels, short stories and plays, many of which were critically acclaimed and widely read.

One of Nag’s most famous works is the play “Mrityunjay” (The Triumph of Death), which was first performed in 1936. The play is considered one of the greatest works of modern Bengali theatre and explores the themes of death, love, and sacrifice. Nag’s other notable works include the novel “Anubhav” (Experience), the play “Samskara” (Rites of Passage), and the collection of short stories “Grihadaha” (The Family Breakdown).

Throughout his career, Nag was known for his strong social and political views, which he expressed through his writing. He was a vocal critic of colonialism and the British Raj, and his works often explored the social and political realities of India during this time. Nag was also an advocate of women’s rights and equality, and his writing often explored the struggles and experiences of women in Indian society.

Kalidas Nag passed away on June 22, 1978, in Kolkata. He left behind a legacy of literary works that continue to be widely read and celebrated to this day. 0 0 0.
