Alice Munro (born July 10, 1931) is a Canadian short story writer known for her concise, lyrical, and psychologically perceptive works. Born in Wingham, Ontario, she grew up on a farm and later studied journalism at the University of Western Ontario. In 1951, she married James Munro and had three daughters.
Alice Munro began writing in her twenties and published her first short story collection, “Dance of the Happy Shades,” in 1968, which won the Governor General’s Award, Canada’s highest literary honor. Over the course of her career, Munro has published 14 collections of short stories and won numerous awards, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013. Her stories often explore the lives of women in small-town Ontario, exploring themes such as love, death, and the passage of time.
Munro’s writing style is characterized by its economy and simplicity, as well as its insight into the complexities of human relationships and the inner lives of her characters. Her works are widely regarded as masterpieces of the short story form and have been published and translated into several languages. Munro has been credited with revolutionizing the short story genre and is considered one of the greatest writers of her generation.

She was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1997.
