Thomas King | Brief Biography
Thomas King is a Canadian author, academic, and broadcaster, who is best known for his works of fiction that explore indigenous experiences and identities. He was born in Sacramento, California on April 24, 1943, to a Greek mother and a Cherokee father.
King grew up in California and later moved to Canada in the 1970s. He studied at the University of Utah and earned a Ph D in American Studies from the University of Calgary. He began his writing career as a journalist and later worked as a producer and host for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
King’s breakthrough as a writer came with the publication of his first novel, “Green Grass, Running Water” (1993), which is a multi-layered and humorous exploration of indigenous identity, history, and culture. The novel was a critical success and established King as an important voice in Canadian letters.
Since then, Thomas King has published several more novels, including “Truth & Bright Water” (1999), “The Back of the Turtle” (2014), and “Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States” (2018). He has also written several works of non-fiction, including “The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America” (2012), which is a witty and insightful exploration of indigenous history and contemporary issues.
