Emma Donoghue is a Canadian-Irish writer and playwright, best known for her novel “Room,” which was published in 2010 and became a bestseller. She was born on October 24, 1969, in Dublin, Ireland, to a French-Canadian mother and an Irish father.

Emma Donoghue studied at University College Dublin and later earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Cambridge. She started her writing career as a playwright and had her first play, “I Know My Own Heart,” performed in Dublin in 1992. In addition to plays, she also wrote fiction, including the novels “Stir-Fry” (1994), “Hood” (1997), and “Landing” (2007).

Her breakthrough came with the publication of “Room,” which tells the story of a five-year-old boy who has lived his entire life in a single room with his mother. The novel was inspired by the real-life case of Josef Fritzl, who held his daughter captive in a basement for 24 years. The novel received widespread critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. It was later adapted into a film, which was nominated for four Academy Awards.

Emma Donoghue continued to write and publish novels, including “The Wonder” (2016), “Akin” (2019), and “The Pull of the Stars” (2020). She has also written several works of historical fiction, including “The Sealed Letter” (2008) and “Frog Music” (2014).

In addition to her writing, Donoghue is also a scholar of 18th-century British literature and has published several academic works on the subject. She lives in London, England, with her wife and their two children.
