Syed Mujtaba Ali | Brief Biography

Syed Mujtaba Ali was a renowned Bengali author, journalist, cultural critic, and translator, who lived from 1904 to 1974. He was born in Sylhet, now in Bangladesh, and was raised in Calcutta, India. He received his education in England, where he studied at Cambridge University.

Ali began his writing career as a journalist, working for several newspapers and magazines in India, including the “Calcutta Chronicle” and the “Times of India.” He later became a cultural critic and was known for his incisive and thought-provoking writing on a wide range of topics, from literature and politics to religion and society.

In addition to his journalism, Ali wrote several books, including “Bangalir Itihas” (History of the Bengalis), “Sri Lanka Itibritta” (History of Sri Lanka), and “Bharat-Pakistan” (India-Pakistan), which are considered to be landmarks in Bengali cultural criticism. He also wrote several novels, including “Phera” (Return) and “Jibon Namer Rail Garita” (The Train of Life), which are considered to be among the finest works of Bengali literature.

One of Ali’s most significant contributions was his translation work. He translated several works from English, including Shakespeare’s plays, into Bengali. He also translated several Bengali works into English, including Rabindranath Tagore’s “Gitanjali” (Song Offerings).

Syed Mujtaba Ali was a multitalented and multifaceted individual, who was greatly admired and respected by his contemporaries. He was a lifelong champion of Bengali cultural heritage and played an important role in preserving and promoting the language and literature of Bengal. 0 0 0.
