Samarendra Nath Sinha | Brief Biography

Samarendra Nath Sinha was a Bengali scientist and teacher born on October 8, 1887, in the city of Barisal, in present-day Bangladesh. He was known for his contributions to the fields of physics, mathematics, and education in India.

Sinha received his early education in Barisal and later completed his higher education at the University of Calcutta, where he obtained a degree in mathematics in 1910. He went on to pursue further studies in physics and mathematics in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Ph.D. in physics from the University of London in 1917.

Upon his return to India, Sinha joined the University of Calcutta as a professor of physics, where he taught for over two decades. During his tenure, he made several significant contributions to the field of physics, particularly in the areas of spectral analysis and electromagnetic theory. He also played a crucial role in establishing the Department of Physics at the University of Calcutta, where he served as its first head.

In addition to his academic contributions, Samarendra Nath Sinha was also known for his commitment to the cause of education and social justice. He was a strong advocate for the education of women and was instrumental in establishing several schools and colleges in India, including the Victoria Institution in Calcutta, which became one of the leading schools in the country.

Sinha was also a vocal supporter of Indian independence and was an active member of the Indian National Congress. He served as the Secretary of the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee and was also a member of the All India Congress Committee.

Samarendra Nath Sinha passed away on June 8, 1956, in Calcutta. He left behind a legacy of academic excellence, commitment to education, and a passion for social justice. 0 0 0.
