George Elliott Clarke | Brief Biography

George Elliott Clarke is a Canadian poet, playwright, and academic who was born on February 12, 1960, in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He is one of Canada’s leading black writers and is known for his poetry that explores the experiences of African Canadians, particularly in Nova Scotia.

Clarke received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo in 1982, and his Master of Arts from Queen’s University in 1986. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in English from Duke University in 1994.

In addition to his academic career, George Elliott Clarke has published several collections of poetry, including “Whylah Falls” (1990), “Execution Poems” (2001), and “Illuminations” (2011). He has also written plays and essays, and his work has been recognized with several awards, including the Governor General’s Award for Poetry in 2001.

George Elliott Clarke has taught at several universities, including the University of Toronto, Duke University, and the University of Waterloo. He is currently a professor of English at the University of Toronto, where he holds the title of University Professor of Canadian Literature.
