Chandrakumar Agarwala-Brief Life Sketch
Chandrakumar Agarwala (1867-1938) was an Assamese lyricist and newspaper editor. He was born in Brahmajan, Kalangpur Mauza, Tezpur. Along with Laxminath Bezbaruah and Hemchandra Goswami, he published ‘Jonaki’ in 1889. In 1918, he started a weekly newspaper entitled ‘Asomiya’. Chandrakumar Agarwala died at his home in Guwahati in 1937.
Agarwala’s lyrical poem ‘Bankunwari’, was published in the first year-first issue of ‘Jonaki’. It inaugurated the tradition of Assamese romantic poetry. He was one of the pioneers of the literary movement of the Jonaki Era. His first book of poetry was called ‘Pratima’. Laxminath Bezbaruai, while discussing the book, said, “Pratima is small in size, but it is made of pure gold. ‘Bin Baragi’ is his second book of poetry. His poetry is characterized by a search for true beauty, love of humanity, optimism and by lyricism and simplicity of expression. 0 0 0
