A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, also known as Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami, was a Bengali spiritual teacher, philosopher, and founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), better known as the Hare Krishna movement. He is the author of numerous books on the Hindu scriptures, including the multi-volume “Srimad-Bhagavatam” and the “Bhagavad Gita As It Is”.
Prabhupada was born on September 1, 1896, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, into a family of Vaishnava devotees. From a young age, he showed a strong inclination towards spirituality and a deep interest in the ancient Hindu scriptures. In his teenage years, he became a disciple of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a prominent teacher of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, and was initiated into the renounced order of life, or sannyasa.
In the early 1950s, Prabhupada felt a strong calling to spread the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad-Bhagavatam to the Western world. In 1965, at the age of 69, he sailed from India to the United States on a cargo ship with the mission to spread the teachings of Krishna consciousness to the Western world. He established the first ISKCON center in New York City and spent the next 11 years traveling and preaching throughout the United States, Europe, and India, building a worldwide movement dedicated to the practice of bhakti-yoga.
Prabhupada’s books, which were translated into numerous languages, played a significant role in popularizing the ancient Hindu scriptures and spreading the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam to a global audience. He wrote over 60 volumes of translations and commentaries on the ancient scriptures, including the Bhagavad Gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Chaitanya Charitamrita, and others.
Despite facing many challenges and obstacles, A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada remained steadfast in his mission to spread the teachings of Krishna consciousness.
