Shamsur Rahman | Brief Biography
Shamsur Rahman was a prominent Bengali poet, lyricist, and writer who was born on November 23, 1929, in Faridpur, East Bengal, British India (now Bangladesh). He was one of the most influential poets of the 20th century in Bangladesh and is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest modern poets.
Early Life and Education:
Shamsur Rahman was born into a middle-class family and grew up in Dhaka, East Bengal. He received his early education in Dhaka and completed his matriculation from Dhaka University. After completing his matriculation, he studied English literature at the University of Dhaka.
Career:
Shamsur Rahman began his career as a journalist and worked for various newspapers, including the Daily Azad, the Daily Ittefaq, and the Weekly Holiday. He later worked as a teacher and translator.
Poetry:
Shamsur Rahman was a prolific writer and is best known for his poetry. He wrote in both Bengali and English and was a versatile poet who wrote on a wide range of subjects, including love, nature, politics, and social issues. He published his first collection of poems, “Nabanna” (The New Harvest), in 1952. Over the course of his career, he published more than 20 collections of poetry, including “Bashi Shataker Gaan” (The Song of a Hundred Poems), “Jibon Namer Rail Garita” (The Song of Life on the Railway), and “Kabi O Kavita” (Poet and Poetry).
Contribution to Bengali Literature:
Shamsur Rahman was a pioneering figure in Bengali literature and made significant contributions to the development of modern Bengali poetry. He was known for his innovative use of language, his use of colloquial speech, and his ability to convey complex ideas through simple language. He was also known for his humanistic approach to poetry and his commitment to the values of freedom, justice, and equality.
Awards and Recognition:
Shamsur Rahman was a highly respected and acclaimed poet, and he received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak, the highest civilian award in Bangladesh, in 1984, and was also awarded the Independence Day Award in 1998. He was also awarded the Shaheed Munier Chowdhury Prize for Literature in 1999.
Death:
